The Herrenwieser See is a Karsee belonging to the municipality of Forbach in the northern Black Forest at an altitude of 830 m, a little northwest of the Schwarzenbach reservoir . It is 1.6 kilometers as the crow flies northeast of Herrenwies on the eastern slope of the 1002 m high Seekopf , a secondary peak of the Badener Höhe . The lake covers an area of 1.2 hectares and is up to 9.5 m deep.
Like all cirque lakes, Herrenwieser See was created by glaciers. The last deepening of the lake basin happened during the Würm glacial period , which ended in the Black Forest about 10,000 years ago.
The lake is part of the Black Forest Valley FFH area between Bühlertal and Forbach . It is designated as a natural monument and, together with the Karwand, also as a biotope . The lake is fenced in to enforce the entry ban imposed for nature conservation reasons. It can be circled on a hiking trail.
At the time of the rafting , a drain was set up at the lake outflow that allowed the dammed water to wash wood into the valley (so-called log drift ).
