Hi Score Girl ( Japanese ハ イ ス コ ア ガ ー ル Hai Sukoa Gāru ) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Rensuke Oshikiri . An anime television series adaptation by JCStaff first aired from July to September 2018 and included on Netflix 's programming . The series is a romantic comedy about the life of a computer gamer in the 1990s.

action

The story centers on the life of arcade video player Haruo Yaguchi , who befriends his rival Akira Ono, who defeats him in almost all of his games. He himself is rather unpopular and writes bad grades, while Akira comes from a wealthy family and embodies the opposite of him. However, since almost all of her day is spent studying and activities selected by her family, she takes refuge in the world of video games and is so good at it that she defeats almost every opponent and makes it into the highscore tables .

The two challenge each other more and more often and become friends in the process. When Akira moves away one day, a world collapses for Haruo and gambling is no longer the same for him as it was with her. Over time, however, he meets the girl Koharu, who is in love with him and uses the video games to be closer to him. After several years, however, Akira returns, which Haruo initially rejects, but accepts him again after he confesses his feelings to her. However, she should go to an elite high school, which would mean that both would be separated again. Therefore, he refrains from playing and studies for the exams in order to be accepted into school. However, he does not succeed and the two therefore try to see each other on other occasions. Koharu also tries to get Haruo to enter into a relationship with her.

During the plot, in addition to character development, the anime also sheds light on developments in the coin-operated gaming scene, the development of video game consoles, and the changes that occurred in the early 90s.

Characters

main characters

Haruo Yaguchi ( 矢 口 春雄 , Yaguchi Haruo )
Haruo is a young man who appears gloomy in various areas of life and has a passion for fighting games and other arcade and video games. He's not good at school, not athletic, and doesn't look very attractive to girls. The only thing he expects for him is crazy gamer skills. While playing in an arcade, he met Akira Ono in a fateful encounter, against whom he played Street Fighter II . From there on he tries to challenge them again and again and the two become rivals, but they get along better and better. However, he does not lose his obsession with computer games over the years.
Akira Ōno ( 大野 晶 , Ōno Akira )
Akira is the daughter of Ōno Zaibatsu and is rich, popular in school, has good grades and shows herself to be versatile, making her the opposite of Haruo. However, she has no friends and is silent and therefore expresses herself more through facial expressions , gestures and her actions. When trying to escape the strict control and educational practice that she faces at home, however, she repeatedly sneaks into game centers in order to forget everyday life by playing. In doing so, she develops exceptional playing skills with which she wins against almost everyone else. She initially meets Haruo during a game of Street Fighter II and has since bonded with him because of their mutual love of gaming.
Koharu Hidaka ( 日 高 小春 , Hidaka Koharu )
Koharu is a girl in Haruo's junior high class. She goes to girls' school with Onizuka throughout high school. She used to be an introverted girl who spent much of her time studying alone. She becomes a more sociable person as the plot progresses, and also takes an interest in video games after playing with Haruo on a Neo Geo MVS installed outside her family's business. She has a natural feel for fighting games, which she uses to gain the approval of Haruos, whom she fell in love with because of his passionate and sweet nature. In the beginning she holds back largely, but later challenges Haruo more.

Supporting characters

  • Namie Yaguchi : Namie is an energetic lady who is raised by Haruo as a single mother. Despite her inadequacies, she supports her son in her own peculiar and loving way. In relation to his friends, she proves to be very curious but friendly and helpful.
  • Akira's Chauffeur: is a nice old man who always looks after Akira's interests. He is a self-proclaimed pachinko addict and has a bad habit of running the family limo over Haruo.
  • Makoto Ono : is Akira's rebellious older sister, who handed over her role as the rightful heir of the Ono conglomerate to her younger sister. She secretly regretted this after seeing Moemi training her for several years. She has since been relieved to know that Akira has found a friend in Haruo through her once-secret passion for games. Makoto has extremely similar qualities to her younger sister Akira, but lacks discipline and steadfastness. After escaping the spartan upbringing her family name brings with it, she now tries to enjoy the wonders of the "outside world" in the wrath of the family teacher Moemi. Therefore, she meets Haruo and his friends more often later. She has good relationships with Haruo's mother and has become another frequent guest of the yaguchi household.
  • Moemi Goda : is the official teacher of the Ono household with glasses. She is a totalitarian authority who will stop at nothing to ensure that Akira is absolutely perfect and worthy as heir to the Ono surname. She is therefore absolutely against any fun in the Ono household, which causes friction among the inhabitants. After seeing that Haruo was after Akira, she tries to prevent this at first, but later begins to give in a little.
  • Genta Doi : is Haruo's classmate in junior high school and back in high school. He is a snob child who tries to appear cultured and amiable, but fails to win Akira over. During high school, he begins hanging out with Haruo and Miyao.
  • Onizuka : is a girl who went to school with Haruo from elementary to middle school. After that, she went to the same girls' high school as Hidaka. She looks a bit grotesque in appearance and exaggerated in demeanor, although she doesn't seem to be self-aware.
  • Numata : is a consultant at Haruo Middle School and also enjoys playing video games. He is similar to Lau Chan from Virtua Fighter .
  • Miyao : One of Haruo's classmates in middle school who is his best friend. He also likes arcade games, though not as much as Haruo. He has a knack for the world of girls and can therefore quickly get into love relationships.
  • Felicia Nikotama : Nikotama is the daughter of an arcade owner who heads the Mizonokuchi Force, a group of gamers in Kawasaki City. She takes Koharu under her wing after showing her skills.

Litigation

On August 5, 2014, Osaka District police raided the offices of Square Enix , the publisher of Hi Score Girl, which SNK Playmore was suing for copyright infringement. For example, SNK Playmore has claimed that the manga allegedly contains over 100 characters and fighting styles from Samurai Shodown and The King of Fighters . Square Enix then voluntarily recalled all printed volumes and temporarily suspended publication of future volumes and digital sales. However, the manga continued its run in Monthly Big Gangan . In August 2015, it was reported that Square Enix and SNK Playmore had reached an agreement in which the lawsuit was abandoned and the manga could be resold in various formats.
