Hieronymus Schulz (also: Hieronymus Scultetus; Hieronymus von Schultz; * around 1460 in Großglogau ; † October 29, 1522 in Wittstock ?) Was Bishop of Brandenburg and Havelberg.

Life

As the son of a village mayor, he reached highly respected offices. Very little is known about his career. In 1504 he was already a well-traveled man who was a pleban in Cottbus , a canon in Brandenburg and an influential councilor to Elector Joachim von Brandenburg . He assisted him in 1505 when his son Joachim II was baptized . He was recognized as an excellent rhetorician. In 1506 he was appointed provost in Salzwedel and in 1507 bishop of the Diocese of Brandenburg .

It was painful for him, however, that the cradle of the Reformation belonged to his district. As Bishop Martin Luther , he was also the first to receive his 95 theses . Still, he tried to find a relative understanding between the contending parties. To do this, he went to Wittenberg and forbade Luther's printer from selling his counter-dispute on indulgence.

Luther initially complied with his request, but when Johann Tetzel and Konrad Wimpina persisted in taking action against his ideas, Luther broke his word and wrote a justification for his bishop on May 22, 1518. After Luther took part in the Leipzig disputation , he became a staunch opponent of it. Nevertheless, he feared that the bull of excommunication, the Decet Romanum Pontificem against Luther, would be published in his parish for fear of revolt.

Therefore, at the Diet in Worms (1521) , he tried to persuade Luther to renounce his ideas. Luther did not abandon his approach, but his employer rewarded him, despite papal contradiction, with the settled diocese of Havelberg , where he was introduced as bishop on August 9, 1521 . He only managed this agency for a year until his death. After his death he was buried in Wittstock.
