The Hildegard-von-Bingen-Gymnasium Twistringen is located in the district of Diepholz , Lower Saxony , and, as a state-recognized, privately owned gymnasium, it is the first Lower Saxony Concordat Gymnasium with an upper level. It was founded in 2004 under the name Gymnasium Twistringen and has been sponsored by the School Foundation of the Diocese of Osnabrück since 2010 . After the completion of the building for secondary level I in 2007, it was expanded in 2011 to include the building for secondary level II and a sports hall and renamed Hildegard-von-Bingen-Gymnasium Twistringen .

The school grounds cover 51,455 m². In 2012 the first Abitur exams took place. A total of around 700 students are taught by around 50 teachers here. The school has three courses in lower secondary level. The school does not have a fixed catchment area, the students come from the surrounding communities.

Foundation of the school

In May 2004, a planning group started to prepare the registration and enrollment for the first year of the grammar school. The reason for the construction of the new school was that high school students from Twistringen had to go a long way to school, and the surrounding high schools in Vechta and Syke were overcrowded due to the termination of the orientation level in 2004.

The city of Twistringen was initially responsible for the new high school. At that time, however, it was already planned to convert the school into a foundation school . In August 2004, the Twistringen grammar school was opened with over 200 guests and 75 pupils in the auditorium of the school center, where the new educational facility was initially housed. It is the 248th grammar school in Lower Saxony.

In September 2004 the school development committee replaced the planning group and Martin Lütjen became the acting headmaster. In June 2007 he was finally appointed headmaster. In January 2005, the concept for the new high school was developed, which was to be implemented as a PPP ( Public-Private-Partnership ) project : An investor built the building and the city rents it for a longer period (20 to 25 years). In February 2005, the Twistringen City Council decided on the location of the new building on Vechtaer Strasse. In May 2006 the bidding process for the new school building was decided.

In September 2006, the Prien company began building the new high school. In January 2007, the shell structures for the three vintage houses were completed. In July of the same year the farewell to the school center took place.

On August 24, 2007 the new school building was handed over to the city of Twistringen. Six days later, the students were allowed to enter the grammar school for the first time. Since the school was to become a Concordat School from August 1, 2008, the corresponding contracts between the State of Lower Saxony and the Diocese of Osnabrück were signed in January 2008. The signing was only possible after a change in the Lower Saxony School Act (NSchG).

In September 2009, the expansion of the Twistringen grammar school to include upper secondary level (upper secondary school) at the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year was approved. In August 2010, work began on building sections II and III (high school upper level and sports hall), which were completed in summer 2011.

Catholic sponsorship of the HvBG Twistringen

The first discussions about the change of provider were held in February 2004 between representatives of the city of Twistringen, the district of Diepholz, the Catholic Church and the school administrators of the Twistringen primary schools. A provisional sponsorship of the Twistringen grammar school was determined by the city.

In November 2005 it was decided that the Twistringen grammar school should be supported by the school foundation of the Osnabrück diocese for the 2006 school year. This new form of school was not without controversy, the chairman of the education and science union , Eberhard Brandt , expressed clear criticism in a letter from the GEW: “The state pays the teachers, the district pays the material costs and the Bishop of Osnabrück determines the profile of the School."

Since a change in the Lower Saxony School Act (NSchG) was necessary for the change of provider, this could not be implemented in the 2006 school year.

In the public meeting of the Twistringen city council on March 28, 2008, the church sponsorship of the planned grammar school was decided by the city of Twistringen. In 2008, Mayor Karl Meyer declared that there would be no change of sponsor for the grammar school without an upper level , which is why the then vice-president and member of the state parliament, Hans-Werner Schwarz, promised support. At the beginning of June 2010 the state parliament should approve the contract between the state of Lower Saxony and the Vatican . The sponsorship of the Twistringen grammar school should then probably be handed over to the Diocese of Osnabrück on August 1, 2010.

On June 28, 2010 the apostolic nuncio Archbishop Jean-Claude Périsset , the ambassador of the Vatican, and Lower Saxony's then Prime Minister Christian Wulff exchanged the ratification documents for the church sponsorship of the Twistringen grammar school. Mayor Karl Meyer and Dean Monsignore Reinhard Molitor as well as many teachers, students and parents were present in the Berlin nunciature .

At the beginning of the school year on August 1, 2010, the school foundation of the Diocese of Osnabrück took over the sponsorship of the grammar school , and in 2011 the name was changed to Hildegard-von-Bingen-grammar school Twistringen . The city of Twistringen, however, remained the property owner and secured the necessary influence on the school foundation board, the district of Diepholz is also represented in this body, as it is responsible for the transport of students.

Structural development

First years without a building

Initially, what was then the Twistringen grammar school was housed in the Twistringen school center. The abolition of the orientation level at the time made it possible to accommodate the first two years in the vacant rooms. For the 2006/07 school year there was no longer enough space at the school center, and for the third year of the grammar school, containers had to be set up as classrooms. In the first few years, considerations were made about the financing of a new school building and in November 2004 a consensus was reached with the district school building fund.

Temporary considerations to use the Twistringen town hall as the location of the grammar school were abandoned due to excessive renovation costs and insufficient statics for school operation. The city council of Twistringen decided to build a new school building on an area on Vechtaer Straße. However, the construction of the new school had to be carried out in several stages, since at the time of the first construction phase the upper level for the Twistringer grammar school had not yet been approved.

Concept and implementation of the new building

Construction phase 1: The core part of the school

In the first section, the core part of the school was built with three class houses, specialist rooms and media rooms, the library and the meditation room. A special feature is the learning atelier, which is modeled on US colleges . It is equipped with a class set of notebooks and an interactive whiteboard .

In September 2006, construction of the new school building on Vechtaer Strasse began. The construction was carried out by the Hamburg general contractor August Prien. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on April 23, and the first construction phase was handed over to the town of Twistringen on August 24. The costs for the first construction phase amounted to 5.6 million euros, which are borne by the city of Twistringen.

Construction phase 2: upper level house and sports hall

The second construction phase could be carried out after the approval of the upper level. It included the upper level building with all-day rooms for secondary levels I and II, a separate wing for the arts and music departments and a two-field sports hall. In addition, some rooms were converted into a cafeteria and a cafeteria.

In the summer of 2010, the second construction phase was also implemented by August Prien using the PPP process. The topping-out ceremony was to be celebrated on December 11 of the same year. On June 6, 2011 the new rooms were occupied. The costs amount to 6.4 million euros.

Further planning

Already at the first planning a sports field behind the high school was considered. In 2012, planning began for an artificial turf pitch that should be playable all year round. The estimated costs are € 560,000 and are to be financed entirely through donations. The square should be able to be used by all schools and clubs in the city.

Visit of the bishop

On September 9, 2011, the Osnabrück bishop Franz-Josef Bode visited the school and named the high school after Hildegard von Bingen . He also inaugurated the new building. A visit by the bishop planned for the 2006/07 school year did not take place due to uncertainties about the sponsorship.

Naming

In a discussion between pupil and parent representatives and the teachers, Hildegard von Bingen was suggested as the namesake. This proposal was accepted by the school foundation of the Diocese of Osnabrück, although Niels Stensen was the potential namesake at the beginning (2004). The name Hildegard von Bingen sat down against z. B. Johannes Prassek ; Scholl siblings through.

In an interview, the headmaster Martin Lütjen said: “Hildegard von Bingen's proposal simply came from the teaching staff, and teachers in particular advocated this proposal. [...] It was a strong achievement by Hildegard von Bingen to found and maintain a monastery in a time dominated by men. This assertiveness fits the profile of the school. "

Environmental school

The official award of the Hildegard-von-Bingen-Gymnasium Twistringen took place on September 6th 2011 in the KGS Sehnde near Hanover. Wall relief in the school building (Hildegard von Bingen)

As part of the naming ceremony, Bishop Franz-Josef Bode gave the grammar school a wall relief that shows the namesake Hildegard von Bingen with the nun Richardis, later abbess of a monastery in Bassum, in the middle. Around them, grouped cartographically, are the four most important sites of the saints, connected by blue-green lines. It begins at the bottom right with Bermersheim, Hildegard's place of birth and baptism, the place of her first years of life. From there the path leads to the left to Disibodenberg, where Hildegard got to know Benedictine life and where she wrote her first work with the monk Volmar: “Scivias”. Via the upper left image field, which shows the Rupertsberg, on which she founded and built her first monastery, through which she became the source of spiritual life for many people in Europe, it goes to the last image detail, which shows the second foundation of Hildegard, the monastery Eibingen, shows. It is encircled by the "choirs of angels" who sing the praise of God, the liturgy, as the main task of man, and especially the Benedictines (inside) as well as the future of glory in and with God.
