action

Eleven-year-old Felix is not exactly a model student and is now getting his last chance after being flown from several schools. Although he quickly finds a friend in Ella, the principal and class teacher Dr. Schmitt-Gössenwein is a real shocker. To be accepted by the three boys in his class, Felix has to pass several tests of courage. He is supposed to break into school in the evening, but is promptly caught by Ms. Schmitt-Gössenwein. He wants nothing more than that it should instantly shrink to the size of a pin. Indeed, the teacher suddenly shrinks and finds refuge in Felix's backpack. Together they try to find the cause. Above all, classmate Mario and his father, the school councilor Henning, stand in their way. Because Mario's father would like to close the school due to insufficient registration numbers and convert it into an elite school. In the course of his research, Felix comes across a 100-year-old story linked to the spirit of the school's founder. The committed reform pedagogue has put a curse on the school and haunted the hallways of the school as a ghost. It was also he who shrunk the teacher.

As the story progresses, Ella learns that Felix Dr. Schmitt-Gössenwein takes around the size of a doll and decides to help them both. Schmitt-Gössenwein falls into the hands of Mario, who wants to torture the teacher and then feed it to his snake. Felix and Ella can save them. They appear just in time for the conference in which Mr. Henning wants to officially close the school. Schmitt-Gössenwein is still too small and does not dare to reveal himself. Felix can present the registration form, but the director's signature is illegible. When Henning reveals to him that the director has already applied for a transfer, he goes home, disaffected, where he tries to convey the bad news to his mother via a Skype conference. Henning leaves the conference, but is also shrunk when he meets Schmitt-Gössenwein. The two fall down with a trapdoor and are trapped in an underground labyrinth. To make matters worse, the school cat is on their heels. In the meantime, Mario and the gang capture Ella, who tries alone to save the teacher and the school council.

Felix changes his mind and decides to try again to save the school. When he enters the basement, he first meets Mario and his two friends as well as the captured Ella. He and Ella can convince the other two boys, however, that Mario doesn't care about friendship with his buddies, because he had known about his father's plans for a long time. And since the parents of the two friends could never pay their school fees, the friendship would only have been a matter of time. Finally, Mario also realizes the difficult situation his father is in, and together the five children now try to free them. In the basement of the house there is a hidden course with tasks from the field of geography and mathematics, which leads to the two adults who are trapped. Together, the five can solve all the tasks and free school board member Henning and Ms. Schmitt-Gössenwein. After they vowed to secure the future of the school from now on, the spirit transforms them back again. Then the two inaugurate the new knowledge trail together.

criticism

The film service judges that the “slapstick, loosely based on a children's book of the same name” sketched “the overly strict teaching staff in such a woodcut manner that the contrasts are not reduced by interactions, but only bridged by empty gestures of reconciliation”. At the same time, the "half-baked Pennälerspaß" leaves the "visual and narrative potential of the story as well as the moments of tension largely unused".
