Hilton Head Island is a city on the island of the same name in Beaufort County in the US state of South Carolina . It is located approximately 20 miles north of Savannah , Georgia and 153 miles south of Charleston , South Carolina. The name of the city is also very often abbreviated to Hilton Head . At the last census in 2010 , the population was 37,099. Hilton Head Island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States , which is why the population can rise to 275,000 in the summer months.
The history of Hilton Head can be traced back over 10,000 years based on archaeological finds. The island was first explored by European explorers in 1521. The history of the borough of Hilton Head Island, however, only dates back to 1983, the date of incorporation.
The Verizon Heritage Tournament, one of the venues for the PGA Tour , has been held on one of the island's golf courses since 1969 .
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 33,862 people lived here in 14,408 households and 9,898 families. The population density was 311 per km². 24,647 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 85.33% White, 8.26% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 4.48% other ethnic groups; 1.21% said they came from several ethnic groups. 11.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 14,408 households, 20.9% had children or adolescents living with them. 59.6% were married couples living together, 6.2% were single mothers, and 31.3% were non-families. 23.8% were made up of single households and 11.3% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.68.
The population was split into 17.3% under 18 years of age, 6.9% from 18 to 24 years of age, 24.5% from 25 to 44 years of age, 27.3% from 45 to 64 years of age and 24.1% from 65 years of age or older. The mean age ( median ) was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 99.0 males.
The median income for a household (median) was 60 438 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 71,211. Males had a median income of $ 37,262 and females $ 30,271. The per capita income was $ 36,621. 4.7% of families and 7.3% of the population lived below the poverty line, of which 9.4% were under 18 years of age and 2.7% were 65 years of age or older.
