The Himberg is 474  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Ohm Mountains in the Eichsfeld district , northern Thuringia ( Germany ).

geography

The Himberg is a southeastern branch of the Ohm Mountains, immediately to the west is the Mittelberg. Viewed clockwise, it lies between the communities of Kaltohmfeld in the north-west, Haynrode in the east and Breitenworbis in the south, the closest town of Worbis is about 5 kilometers in a west-south-west direction. The mountain is bordered by the valley of the Krajaer Bach in the northeast, the pass at the Hahn Forsthaus at the transition to the Haarburg in the east, the Eichsfelder Kessel in the south and the Ebertal in the west.

nature

The mountain is completely forested, the main tree species is the beech. Geologically, the mountain consists of upper and lower corrugated limestone with foamy limestone on the plateau, upper red sandstone with small limestone deposits and some eruptions surrounds the shell limestone layer. The Hahnklippen are located on the southeastern edge of the mountain plateau. These lead over to a small mountain spur directed to the southwest, the approximately 455 m high Klei (or Kley). The word Klei comes from Middle Low German and is derived from glue , the lime and clay soil sticks very strongly to the shoes. A corridor area north of Breitenworbis was called the Kleifeld for a long time , other landscape names with this name can be found near Worbis and Siemerode.

Hydrogeologically, there are almost uniform groundwater conditions on the Himberg and the neighboring Mittelberg due to the almost horizontal sequence of strata, in contrast to other strata areas of the Ohmgebirge. Headwaters lie in the north of the Himberg, in the east west of the Forsthaus and between Mittelberg and Himberg / Klei.

The mountain can only be reached via hiking and farm trails. There are vantage points on individual steep slopes to the south or east.

Wallburg on the Klei

On the Klei there was a prehistoric hill fort, also called the Schwedenschanze. A curved wall with a ditch in front ran from steep slope to steep slope and separated a 40 to 50 acre castle area from the mountain spur, the other three sides were protected by the natural steep slope. It is likely to have been a relatively large people's castle from the Iron Age, archaeologically only a broken fragment has been secured so far. Nothing is known about a later settlement of the castle area. It is presumed whether there was a connection to the similarly prehistoric settlement of the nearby Hasenburg and the early settlement of Hugenworbis .
