history

In 1899, Joseph Hipp (1867–1926) produced a biscuit flour in his bakery, part of the Lebzelterei that had existed in Pfaffenhofen for centuries , which was sold in Munich from 1921 by his son Georg Hipp (1905–1967). Later the company switched production mainly to “J. Hipp's rusks for children ”, but the gingerbread and wax making was still in operation. After the death of Joseph Hipp, Georg Hipp took over the production of the rusk flour and his mother Maria expanded the business with a café. In 1932 the business was split up and his brother Hans Hipp took over the café, which still exists today, as well as the confectionery and gingerbread shop .

On July 1, 1932, Georg Hipp founded the company “Nutrient Hipp”. In the same year he began to produce baby food in a former hop hall on part of what is now the company premises. Because there were problems with the National Socialists , production was relocated to Munich. When the buildings were destroyed in an air raid in 1944, Hipp relocated to Pfaffenhofen . There the company developed into a leading company in the food industry.

Hipp was the first company in Germany to manufacture baby food industrially in cans from the mid-1950s , but for reasons of hygiene, the fruit and vegetable menus have been bottled in jars since 1959/1960.

In 1964, Georg's son Claus Hipp joined his father's company. In 1967 he took over the management. For a long time the management consisted of the three brothers Claus Hipp, Georg Johannes Hipp and Paulus Hipp. Georg Johannes Hipp left the company in 2010, and other family members have been added over time.

In 2016, Hipp took over the dairy industry company Herford GmbH & Co. KG (MIG) of the DMK subsidiary Humana GmbH in Herford . Milk powder and ready-to-drink baby formula are produced there.

Headquarters Sachseln, Switzerland

In 1999 the company headquarters was relocated to Sachseln, Switzerland, where the Hipp family has been active since 1954 with bio-familia AG , which specializes in organic muesli .

Establishment of Somalon

The company history of the subsidiary Somalon is preceded by personal relationships of the couple who founded the company. The Swiss Anny Metzner and Georg Hipp from Germany met in the canton of Obwalden . The couple often made pilgrimages to St. Brother Klaus in the pilgrimage site of Flüeli-Ranft above Sachseln . In Germany, the Hipp family was already successful with baby food. In order to strengthen Obwalden as a business location and to market baby food from Sachseln, they founded the Somalon company in Sachseln in 1954 . The Graubünden lawyer Caspar Arquint became the director.

Bio-familia AG is founded

Through personal contact with Edwin Bircher, the son of cereals -Erfinders Max Bircher-Benner , the idea was born, in Sachseln a ready Birchermüesli produce. The Somalon company received permission from Bircher to name its product “Organic Bircher muesli” and in 1959 launched the first Bircher muesli under the brand name “familia”. The organic Birchermüesli was successful and could be exported to Germany, Austria, England, Holland and the USA within a short time. As a result, the company was renamed from Somalon to bio-familia in 1978 . In 1987 the foreign share was 70 percent, but fell to 40 percent by 2008 while the company grew at the same time. The products are produced both for the company's own brand and for wholesalers' own brands.

criticism

In June 2012 the company received the golden cream puff for its instant fruit teas made from sugar granules , a negative award for the “most brazen advertising lie of 2012”. Hipp advertised its instant fruit teas, which are supposedly recommended for toddlers from the 12th month. The granules of the teas, however, contained 94 to 96% sugar, which means that a fruit tea mixed according to the specifications contained around two grams of sugar per 100 milliliters. This contradicts the claim that Hipp often claims to offer "child-friendly" and "healthy" products, explained Foodwatch. According to nutrition experts, children are not allowed to have sweetened drinks and water should be drunk instead.

In November 2012, Hipp said it took these teas off the market and since the end of 2012 simple tea bags without added sugar have been on the market as a substitute product. In August 2013, the consumer organization Foodwatch complained that Hipp continues to sell similar products under the Bebivita brand - a wholly owned Hipp subsidiary.

In October 2013, a random sample from the ZDF consumer magazineWISO ” revealed that genetically modified vegetables were used in Hipp's organic baby food. This was proven in almost a quarter of the examined samples from Hipp. Hipp announced that it would investigate the results of the investigation and tighten up the analysis of the products.

Awards

The company was awarded the “World Sustainability AwardEnergy Globe Award in 2002 and the German Environmental Reporting Award in 2003/2004 .

The latest awards are:
