Hippolyte Louis Jean Simon (born February 25, 1944 in Saint-Georges-de-Rouelley , Department Manche , France ; † August 25, 2020 in Caen , Department Calvados ) was a French clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Clermont .

Life

Hippolyte Simon, son of a farming family, studied theology at the Institut Notre-Dame à Avranches (1956–1963), the seminar in Coutances (1963–1968) and the seminary in Bayeux (1968–1970) as well as philosophy at the Paris Sorbonne and on Institut Catholique de Paris . On June 27, 1970 he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Coutances .

From 1974 to 1978 he worked as a pastor at the high school in Mortain. From 1978 to 1990 he taught at the Interdiocesan Seminary in Caen. He then was Episcopal Vicar in Coutances for the training of priests and lay people. From 1990 to 1996 he was also the diocesan commissioner for the permanent diaconate .

On February 22, 1996, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Clermont . He was ordained episcopate on May 4th of the same year by the Bishop of Coutances, Jacques Fihey ; Co- consecrators were his predecessor Jean Louis Joseph Dardel and Claude Feidt , Bishop of Chambéry .

On December 8, 2002, with the elevation of Clermont to archbishopric, he was appointed its first archbishop. Simon was Vice President of the French Bishops' Conference (2007–2013) and representative of the Bishops' Conference of France in the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) (2003–2006).

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on March 17, 2016.
