The Church of St. Tsar Lazar ( Serbian : Црква Св. Цара Лазара / Crkva Sv. Cara Lazara) is a Serbian Orthodox church in the village of Velika Reka in western Serbia .

The branch church , consecrated to the Holy Tsar and Great Martyr Lazar , was built between 1939 and 1972. It belongs to the parish Donja Trešnjica in the dean's office Azbukovica of the eparchy Šabac of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Velika Reka belongs to the Opština Mali Zvornik (municipality of Mali Zvornik) in Okrug Mačva (administrative district Mačva) in westernmost central Serbia .

According to the 2011 census, there were 373 inhabitants in the village. Serbs make up the local population . Velika Reka is made up of the following hamlets : Podgaj, Popović, Reka, Sastavci and Ilići .

The village of Velika Reka is on the border of the municipalities of Mali Zvornik , Krupanj and Ljubovija . Krupanj lies in a north-east direction and Ljubovija in a south-east direction. The lower part of the village of Velika Reka is also located on the Drina River , which here represents the state border between Serbia and the western neighbor of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

The Loznica - Mali Zvornik - Ljubovija regional road runs through the lower part of the village . The village is located about 20 km southeast of the municipality capital Mali Zvornik. The Velika Reka river flows through the village.

Location of the church in town

The Church of St. Tsar Lazar stands in the lower part of Velika Reka. The village's primary school, built in 1904, stands next to the church in the churchyard. There are some old grave monuments in the churchyard.

The village post office, the village pub and the village shops are also located in the lower, flatter part of Velika Reka. The regional road also leads through the lower part of the village not far from the church.

history

The construction of the Church of St. Tsar Lazar began in 1939/1940. Due to the Second World War , construction work on the church came to a standstill. In 1972 construction continued in what is now socialist Yugoslavia . From the start of construction until the resumption of further construction, there were no services in the church.

The church was completed in 1972. In the same year, the bones of the Serbian soldiers from the Battle of Mačkov near the village from 1914 during the First World War were transferred to the crypt . Their exact number is unknown. And on June 9, 1974 the Church of St. Tsar Lazar was solemnly consecrated by the bishop of the then eparchy Šabac - Valjevo Jovan (Velimirović). The Donja Trešnjica parish includes the villages: Donja Trešnjica , Velika Reka, Culine , Čitluk , Amajić , Budišić , Sakar in the Mali Zvornik Opština and the village of Planina in the Krupanj Opština. The parish priest is Archpriest Miladin Nikolić (2018).

architecture

The church is a single-nave church building in the traditional Serbian-Byzantine style with an altar - apse in the east and a small steeple above the church entrance on the west side of the church. The patronage icon above the entrance depicts St. Tsar Lazar.

Inside the church building is the wooden iconostasis with icons . The church is not frescoed .
