The high-speed line Ankara - İstanbul is a new line of the TCDD , which was built in several construction phases between the capital of Turkey and its largest city. Commissioning took place on July 25, 2014, and since then the Yüksek Hızlı Tren ( high-speed train ) has been connecting the two cities with a journey time of just over four hours.

history

planning

In mid-2001, the Turkish government approved plans for a high-speed line between Istanbul and Ankara. The line should be designed for a maximum speed of 230 km / h and be completed by 2006.

construction

The new line was built by TCDD. It is 533 kilometers long, two-track, designed for 250 km / h and electrified with 25 kV / 50 Hz alternating current. 55 bridges and 43 tunnels are to be built by the completion of the route. The project is divided into different sections:

High-speed rail lines in Turkey

Construction of the first section between Esenkent and Eskişehir began on December 10, 2003. It was originally planned as an upgraded line, but was then implemented as a new line regardless of the existing infrastructure. Two thirds of this section was completed in April 2006 and fully completed by the end of 2007. In the course of 2007 test drives with two rented Italian FS-ETR-500 high-speed trains took place on this section . On March 13, 2009, the section, the construction costs of which are estimated at 835 million US dollars, went into regular operation.

The second section between Istanbul and Eskisehir was about halfway finished in 2010. Most of the engineering structures had to be erected on this section with 39 tunnels and 33 bridges . In 2011, construction costs for this section were estimated at $ 1.32 billion. On December 27, 2013, the test drives began on the Eskişehir-Istanbul section. The Turkish Minister of Transport was also present at these test drives.

The Esenkent – Ankara and Köseköy – Gebze sections were the last completed sections. For the Köseköy – Gebze section, costs of 136 million US dollars were estimated in 2011. On July 25, 2014, the entire route was officially opened by the then Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . The total cost was 3 billion euros.

Since the existing line of the Anatolian Railway runs through the city center of Eskişehir and there are serious problems with the existing level crossings , the construction of a more than two kilometers long tunnel with five tracks was planned for the center of the city: two each for high-speed traffic and the conventional passenger traffic as well as a track for freight traffic . Ultimately, a shorter tunnel with 3 tracks was implemented. The other transitions at the same height were omitted.

Hızlı Tren in Eskişehir 2012

The first section of the high-speed line between Esenkent and Eskişehir has been in operation since March 13, 2009. The section of the line is thus considered to be the first high-speed line in Turkey . From Ankara to Esenkent, the trains used the existing route; travelers to Istanbul had to change trains in Eskişehir. The time saved by opening the first section was one hour. In the period from March 13, 2009 to March 11, 2010, the TCDD carried 1,250,000 passengers in 4,500 trips here. The line has been fully operational since July 25, 2014; the trains run continuously between Ankara and Istanbul. According to the timetable, the journey time is now around four hours instead of the previous six hours.

outlook

A 460 km extension of the line from Ankara to Sivas in the east, the Ankara – Sivas high-speed line , is in test operation; its commissioning is scheduled for mid-2020 [obsolete] .

In Istanbul, the line currently ends in the Pendik district , where there is a connection to the Istanbul S-Bahn . A continuation of the route to the west through a connection to the Marmaray project, a tunnel that is already in operation under the Bosporus , is planned in the first quarter of 2019. However, the implementation of this expansion is uncertain.

HT65000 in Ankara train station

TCDD has so far purchased twelve multiple units from CAF in Spain for high-speed traffic and operates them as the HT65000 series . The trains were transferred by rail from Spain to Turkey. Each unit has a "Business Class" with 55 seats in the 2 + 1 seating arrangement and 354 seats in the "First Class" in the 2 + 2 seating arrangement. The buffet area of the multiple units has eight seats, the doors are always arranged in the middle of the car. The multiple units can also be used in double traction .

In June 2013 it was announced that Siemens was delivering seven Velaro high-speed trains to Turkey. The contract, valued at 285 million euros, also included maintenance for seven years. In 2018, the Turkish State Railways ordered ten more high-speed trains from Siemens, increasing the Velaro fleet to 17 trains. The order is worth around EUR 340 million, including maintenance over three years.

ETCS Level 1 is used as the train protection system . ETCS Level 2 will also be installed in the 212 km long Ankara – Konya section . So far, only test drives with a maximum of 120 km / h have taken place under ETCS Level 1 on the route section completed in December 2010 (as of 2011). In the future, 250 km / h will be permitted here.
