The Koblenz flood protection is intended to protect the districts in Koblenz affected by floods . The city lies on the rivers Rhine and Moselle . Because of this location, it is particularly often and severely affected by floods. Flood protection was completed for the Ehrenbreitstein district in 2003, while protection for the Lützel , Neuendorf and Wallersheim districts was completed in 2019.

Flood in Koblenz

The records of floods in Koblenz go back to 1882. Since then, there have been repeated floods that have flooded the districts on the banks of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The 1993 Rhine flood , which is also known as the flood of the century , reached a level of 9.49 meters in Koblenz. In comparison, the mean water of the Rhine at the Koblenz gauge is 2.37 meters. The residents were also hit particularly badly in 1983. That year there were two floods within just under two months. In mid-April a water level of 8.68 meters was reached and at the end of May there was another flood with a high of 8.77 meters. Further floods in Koblenz, which occurred before 1882 and are marked with high water marks, date from 1784 with 10.20 and 1651 with 9.71 meters.

Protection for Ehrenbreitstein

The Ehrenbreitstein district was completely equipped with flood protection between 1997 and 2003 . The stationary part of the flood protection combined with the portable dam beams protect the district from a flood level of up to 10.88 meters.

Back then, the state left the planning for flood protection completely to the city of Koblenz. The federal highway 42 running along the Rhine and the parallel railway line were raised in the course of flood protection. Thus, the embankment with an integrated flood barrier now protects the district from flooding. In total, the construction costs amounted to approx. 12 million euros and 90% were borne by the state.

Protection for Lützel, Neuendorf and Wallersheim

Construction work for a flood protection wall in Koblenz-Neuendorf

The Neuendorf district is considered to be the worst hit by the floods. So there have long been efforts to protect this district. On the basis of a project document from 2004, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate decided within the framework of the Federal Garden Show 2011 to implement flood protection for these districts against 10-year floods.

In March 2006, the processing of the preliminary planning for flood protection in Koblenz was completed. The task of this preliminary planning was to find various possible solutions and to compare and evaluate them with one another. With a city council resolution in mid-2006, the city decided to pursue the preferred solution variant. The draft planning was completed at the end of 2006. The planning was approved by SGD Nord on November 6, 2008 . On February 26, 2010, the first groundbreaking ceremony for flood protection in the districts of Lützel, Neuendorf and Wallersheim on the left bank of the Rhine was officially carried out by the then Mayor Eberhard Schulte-Wissermann . The first phase of construction stretched from the Balduin Bridge to the protective harbor, the second from Neuendorfer Strasse over the allotment gardens towards Neuendorf. In a third construction phase, the dyke from 1927 between the Europabrücke and the Moselle railway bridge as well as the Moselle railway bridge and Balduin bridge was upgraded and the An der Bleiche pumping station was renovated. The system, estimated at 45 million euros, will consist of a combination of mobile elements made of aluminum as well as protective walls and dams . The construction work was completed in 2019.

Sheet piling on the banks of the Rhine looking towards Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

The flood protection consists mainly of sheet piling . Their maximum protection height is 8.75 meters at the Koblenz gauge. This height protects against a so-called 10-year flood taking into account the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle floods. The wall itself protects up to a level of 8.45 meters, in addition, a freeboard can be added, which is another 30 cm high. In the area of the dikes between Europabrücke and Balduinbrücke, the protective height is 9.7 m. With a length of around 3.8 km, this flood wall along the Rhine is the longest local flood protection wall in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
