action

The hand that slips into the pocket of a jacket hanging over the back of a chair belongs to Lucin Savlir. In order to buy schnapps, he tries to steal from a colleague in the canteen. He is caught and beaten up. Out in the dirt, Magdalena finds him, a young worker who, in coarse clothes, lubricates treadmills in the large industrial plant and takes love lightly after work. Lucin accompanies them home, to an old hut up on the edge of the quarry. Ties of affection are spun between him, the unstoppable drinker, and the young woman. Lucin feels right at home in Magdalena's hut, and Magdalena shows the other men the door because of him.

The next morning, however, Magdalena was disappointed: when she unexpectedly returned to her apartment, she found Lucin, a wage packet she had hidden with money in her hand. Angry, she throws Lucin out of the house. But Lucin doesn't give up. Soon he comes back and again flatters himself in Magdalena's trust. She gets him back the lost position and even pays his debts to his colleagues.

All goes well for a while. Magdalena is happy; the two even forge plans for the future, which they want to start together in a new job, among strangers. But then the teasing of the work colleagues, their allusions to Magdalena's way of life, become unbearable for Lucin. He gets drunk again and is beaten up a second time for his bickering. When he secretly wants to disappear forever, Magdalena, startled from sleep, stands in his way. Lucin knocks her down - the woman lies there, unconscious. Sobered by the shock, Lucin puts the unconscious woman in a blanket, drags her down to the factory, puts her in a truck and drives into town, where he takes Magdalena to a hospital. He only returns to the construction site to get his suitcase and the last wages. He appears again in the hospital - he wants to say goodbye to Magdalena. The two stand in front of each other in the empty corridor and can hardly find any words. But Magdalena's shy kiss means more reunion (at Lucin's new job) than goodbye.

Reviews

The Evangelical movie watchers drew the following conclusions after the German premiere in the program of the ARD: "Czechoslovak feature film chamber performance tones of stands out due to the performances of its lead actor and by the sensitive director Karel Kachynas. Recommended for all adults. ”The lexicon of international films is also full of praise:“ A sober description of the reality of a society that hopes for change; without charge, but clearly formulated with a spark of optimism. The film is characterized by original image ideas, well-groomed camera work and excellent actors and is especially sympathetic and touching due to its love for human creatures. "
