The Hollau is a forest area in the Obereichsfeld in the border area of the districts of Unstrut-Hainich and Eichsfeld in northwest Thuringia , ( Germany ).

location

The Hollau forest area lies on a ridge east of the Obereichsfelder Höhe between the valleys of the upper Luhne and the upper Unstrut , as well as its right-hand tributary of the Mertelgraben . The forest area is bounded in the west by the former Leinefelde – Treysa railway line and today's end point of the trolley line from Lengenfeld unterm Stein to Küllstedt , in the north by the districts of Dingelstädt and Helmsdorf and in the south by Bickenriede and Büttstedt . The eastern continuation of the ridge runs over the Lengefelder Warte of the Mühlhausen Landgraben and the Lange Mark into Mühlhausen, about 10 kilometers away .

Surveys

The highest mountains are at 425.7 m an unnamed knoll north of Büttstedt , as well as the Stationsberg further east (419 m). The lake heads (408 m) and the iceberg (394 m) to the southeast no longer belong to the forest area . From the edge of the forest you have a good view to the north of the upper Unstrut valley near Dingelstädt and to the south-east of the northwestern Thuringian basin around Mühlhausen .

nature

The Hollau is a plateau predominantly covered with deciduous forest, on the ground a diverse flora has developed, among other things with Märzenbecher and orchids. Immediately on the southern slope of the highest elevation are the so-called Hünenlöcher , two interesting sinkholes with a diameter of about 25 meters and a depth of about 5 meters (protected as a natural monument since 1941). Another natural monument are the three oaks , which are located further south in the direction of the former Anrode monastery , of which only two still exist. Numerous hiking trails lead from the surrounding villages through the forest area.

High praise

About 120 meters south of the highest point of the Hollau is a high medieval fortified complex (flat moth), the so-called Hohe Lobe . It consists of a tower mound with a diameter of about 15 meters and a surrounding ditch 4 to 5 meters wide. It could have been a control room or a small manor castle. There are no direct written mentions of a castle in this area, nothing is known about a relationship to the desert towns of Bezelsrode and Seehausen on the southern roof of the Hollau.
