Holly-Jane Rahlens
Holly-Jane Rahlens (* 1950 in Queens , New York City ) is an American writer and actress living in Germany .
Life
Holly-Jane Rahlens grew up as a child of Jewish parents in Brooklyn and Queens and studied literature and theater at Queens College . In 1972 she moved to West Berlin , where she worked as a moderator at RIAS Berlin. Her first radio play Sudeka - The Death of a Young Poet was produced by RIAS in 1979 under the direction of Robert Matejka . In the 1980s she worked as an actress, radio play author and radio presenter, and later also in television. At the same time, she made a name for herself with her bilingual one-woman shows on Berlin cabaret stages, including a night out with Dottie (via Dorothy Parker ) and autobiographically inspired monologues such as New York, Neukölln and Berlin, Brooklyn and back . Her stage monologue One fine day, or why a princess doesn't wear orthopedic shoes ( GRIPS Theater 1990) was adapted as a television play by the SFB and later became the basis of an English-language textbook. The radio play Daily soap (produced by SWR ), written and staged by Antje Vowinckel based on her idea , received the Prix Europa as Best European Radio Drama in 2000 .
Rahlens also worked as a dialogue coach and author / translator of movies from directors such as Wim Wenders , Maria Schrader , Veit Helmer and Eric Till with and wrote columns for the Film Festival Journal of the Berlinale .
Rahlens published her first novel, Becky Bernstein goes Berlin , in 1996. Her text Prinz William, Maximilian Minsky und ich was written in 1995 as a radio play, adapted for school reading in 1999 and finally published in 2002 as her third novel . The bestseller was published in 13 countries and was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in 2003 as the best book for young people . The corresponding audio book read by the author was on the list of the best for the German Record Critics' Award in the first quarter of 2003 . The film Max Minsky und ich, based on this book and directed by Anna Justice (produced by X-Films Creative Pool ), for which Rahlens also wrote the script, was released in German cinemas on September 6, 2007.
Holly-Jane Rahlens lives as a freelance writer in Berlin-Charlottenburg .
