Location of Holsen in Hüllhorst

Holsen is a village in the municipality of Hüllhorst in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Minden-Lübbecke with around 1100 inhabitants and is located on the southern slope of the Wiehen Mountains .

geography

Holsen is divided into the districts of Fetten Holsen , Magern-Holsen (in the north at the foot of the Wiehengebirge), Holser Bruch in the middle and Kümmerdingsen in the very south. Fetten Holsen and Magern-Holsen , the names of which most likely refer to the different qualities of the soil, have almost grown together over time, so that this area is perceived as a "village of Holsen". Holsen was originally a scattered settlement that was consolidated into a town center by newer buildings, mostly single-family houses.

Kümmerdingsen is located in a hilly area, lower than the other two districts and is structured in a completely different landscape with forests, hills and ponds. Kümmerdingsen goes back to a small scattered settlement of seven relatively large farms that are no longer cultivated. In recent times the district has changed significantly. The settlement of a roof tile factory in the 19th century led to the excavation of clay and thus to a change in the landscape. Due to the major interventions in nature, the landscape there has been significantly redesigned. Clay ponds became ponds, small forests were planted in other excavations, and compensation areas were even created in reserve. Since excavations are no longer carried out in Kümmerdingsen, nature can now recover and develop independently.

Natural space

Holsen is located in the southern foreland of the Wiehen Mountains. The corridor north of Holsener Straße is dominated by large free arable land. Further south, the natural environment is more structured and varied. Renaturation takes place here, for example through the planting of a former construction waste landfill in the district. In this landscape with caves, ponds, forests (original and renatured) there are individual farms with oaks and many orchards.

Neighborhoods

Holsen borders on the following localities, municipalities, cities ( clockwise , starting in the north):

Nettelstedt ( city of Lübbecke ), Schnathorst , Tengern , Hüllhorst , Ahlsen-Reineberg (all municipality of Hüllhorst )

history

Holsen was first mentioned in a document in 1260 .

Until December 31, 1972, Holsen was an independent municipality in the Hüllhorst district in what was then ( Lübbecke district ). On January 1, 1973 the place was incorporated into Hüllhorst and has been part of the Minden-Lübbecke district since then .

Economy and Infrastructure

The place is still dominated by agriculture, but there are only three main farms left. The former importance of the cigar industry no longer exists today. There were several branches of cigar factories and for 1901 78 people are listed who either worked from home or produced cigars in a factory.

The roof tile factory in Kümmerdingsen, which was established in 1860 and employed around 70 people, had a significant impact on this part of the town. The company Dachkeramik Meyer-Holsen is of no small importance internationally.

Ecclesiastically the village is connected to the nearby Schnathorst. The school location Holsen was given up, the Holsen children go to elementary school in Schnathorst and to comprehensive school in Hüllhorst. Kindergarten places are in demand in Schnathorst as well as in Hüllhorst and Ahlsen.

Holsen has a cemetery with a cemetery chapel, a fire station and a village community center, both of which are inherited from the time as an independent community. The youth music school of the municipality of Hüllhorst is housed in the former school and there is a small gym and a sports field for sports. The nearby neighboring towns of Hüllhorst and Schnathorst take care of the supply of shops and services.

In the past, Holsen had its own outdoor swimming pool (20 × 30 m) when a bathing establishment was built in a mill pond in 1930, but it fell into disrepair during the war and was therefore abandoned.
