The former nature reserve with the NSG HA 150 label is around 375 hectares in size. It is almost completely part of the FFH area “Holzberg bei Stadtoldendorf, Heukenberg” and the EU bird sanctuary “ Sollingvorland ”. The area has been under nature protection since May 16, 1991. On December 20, 2018, it opened up in the “ Holzberg, Denkiehäuser Wald, Heukenberg ” nature reserve . The responsible lower nature conservation authority was the district of Holzminden.
The former nature reserve is located south of Stadtoldendorf. It extends on the north, west and south-west slopes of the Holzberg . To the northwest it is bounded by the Eberbach. The area is characterized by hay meadows and meadows , occasionally also arable land . In the grassland areas, partially offset by hedges are structured, there are numerous small bodies of water ( springs , streams and ponds ), often in conjunction with Kalkquellsümpfen, which are among the rarest habitat types in Lower Saxony. In the south of the protected area there are small areas of semi- arid grassland .
The wooden mountain meadows are predominantly surrounded by other agricultural areas ; in the higher areas they border on the forest areas on the Holzberg. In the northeast, the site includes the former site training area of Yorck barracks in Stadtoldendorf to the former nature reserve. The approximately 54 hectare part up to Kreisstraße 42 was taken over by the NABU Foundation National Natural Heritage and looked after by the Holzminden district group of the German Nature Conservation Union.
