Holzhausen over Aar belongs to the municipality of Hohenstein in the Rheingau-Taunus district in southern Hesse .

geography

Holzhausen is located in the western Hintertaunus in the valley head of the Michelbach , a right eastern tributary of the Aar and at the transition to the south into the Breithardter valley about 20 km north of the state capital Wiesbaden . The municipality of Aarbergen connects to the north of Holzhausen .

history

The oldest spelling of the place name is Holthuse , it was first mentioned in 1332. To distinguish it from other places with the same name, “über Aar” is used. H. located above the Aar , added.

In 1876 the local Jewish community opened a new synagogue (one-storey building with 25 square meters) in Felsterbachstrasse, which replaced an older one. It was sold in 1937 and it housed a small print shop until the 1960s. In 1974 the synagogue was demolished by the owner.

On July 1, 1972, the previously independent community of Holzhausen above Aar formed the new large community of Hohenstein together with six other communities on a voluntary basis as part of the regional reform in Hesse . For Holzhausen, as for the other districts, a local district with a local advisory board and local council was established.

On June 19, 1967, the municipality of Holzhausen via Aar in the then Untertaunuskreis , Wiesbaden administrative district , was awarded a coat of arms with the following blazon : In the divided shield above, a gold-crowned and armored lion, divided four times by silver and red, three in silver below red balls.

The upper part of the coat of arms shows the Hessian lion and the three spheres below are stylized apples, which are supposed to refer to St. Nicholas.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The Protestant church, built in 1451, is Gothic in the choir, the nave with the characteristic tower was consecrated in 1728. A school is mentioned around the year 1600, the last school building from 1865 now serves the Protestant parish as a community center and nursing station. Instead of the churchyard around the church, the current cemetery was laid out outside the local area in 1879. The village community center was inaugurated in 1965. The kindergarten, built in 1959, was expanded in 1970. In 2002 the newly built kindergarten with a newly designed children's playground was inaugurated.

Sports and clubs

In addition to numerous cycling and hiking trails in the vicinity, TV Hohenstein operates several tennis courts in Holzhausen. The TGSV Holzhausen plays football in the Rheingau-Taunus District A League and also offers other sports such as bouncing ball, badminton and dancing. There is also a volunteer fire and youth fire brigade as well as a community-sponsored youth club.

In the last ten years, numerous young families have settled in the building area in front of Hahn , who actively contribute to the further development of the village community and the lively club life.

Economic structure

Holzhausen, also mainly characterized by agriculture, once had rich fruit trees. The apples from Holzhausen were sold as far as Frankfurt .
