In 1995 Goldstar was renamed LG Electronics, LG being the abbreviation for Lucky GoldStar . The name LGe is also often found , where the e stands for electronics . The current company logo was supplemented by the added backronym L ife’s G ood . The group offers products from the fields of information technology , entertainment electronics , mobile communications , photovoltaics and household appliances .

LG Electronics was the world market leader in cell phones based on the CDMA2000 standard, which was sometimes used in America, parts of Africa and Asia . The subsidiary LG Display is the second largest manufacturer of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) after Samsung . LG is also the market leader in the field of CD-ROM drives.

In 2014, LG Electronics received a Big Brother Award for the inadmissible and non-deactivatable retransmission of user data to the company using “smart” televisions .

LG Mobile (cell phones)

Since 2004 the company has been trying to position itself on the European mobile phone market.

In December 2006, LG announced the KE850 touchscreen mobile phone , which can be seen as a competitor to the Apple iPhone , which was announced the following January .

In February 2007, LG, in cooperation with Prada, brought the so-called “Prada Phone”, a visually enhanced version of the KE850 , onto the market, also without UMTS function, video telephony and voice function. Since the end of 2007 LG has been offering the successors KU990 ("Viewty") and KS20 and since the end of 2008 the KC910 Renoir .

In 2009, the company introduced the new user interface for its 3D S-Class mobile phones on the ARENA (LG-KM900) . It was followed by the LG GS290, also known as "Cookie Fresh".

The LG Optimus Black was presented at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas . This smartphone is characterized by the use of a Nova display screen type developed by LG with particularly high brightness. This should make reading the screen easier even under difficult conditions, for example in strong, direct sunlight. The specified value of 700 nit corresponds to 700 candela per square meter, which is more common in Germany.

LG Optimus 3D

In addition, the first smartphone with two processor cores was presented at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011 . The so-called Optimus 2X contains a Tegra processor from the chip manufacturer Nvidia and is marketed in Germany under the name Optimus Speed . During a presentation at the CES, the device, connected to a television, was able to play a video game that was produced for the Playstation 3 smoothly.

At the GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on February 14, 2011, LG presented the world's first smartphone with a three-dimensional display. It is a process that enables viewing of 3D content without glasses. The LG P920 Optimus 3D also has two cameras that can be used to take 3D photos and videos.

The smartphone Optimus 4X HD was presented at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona (February 27 to March 1), LG's first smartphone with the quad-core processor Nvidia Tegra 3 with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz. In addition to its own quad-core smartphone, LG produces the Google Nexus 4. In the fourth quarter of 2013, LG Electronics sold 13.2 million smartphones.

The LG G2 was presented in 2013 and scored points with the so-called “Rear Key” buttons on the back instead of the usual side buttons on smartphones, which should achieve better and easier operation. The G2 is the successor to the Optimus G and has a 5.2-inch display, which, with 1920 × 1080 pixels, has a pixel density of 424 ppi and a surface area of 75.9%. The smartphone weighs 140 g and is 138.5 × 70.9 × 9.14 mm in size. The display edges (bezel) on the sides are only 2.65 mm wide. According to LG, the G2 with the 3000 mAh battery should achieve a solid standby time of 826 hours. The G2 ran with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean when it was released and has the in-house system interface "LG UX". The successor, the LG G3, was presented in May 2014. Its successor, in turn, is the LG G4, which was launched in early June 2015.

At the beginning of 2016, the LG G5 was presented at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona, together with so-called LG Friends , optional accessories: a Bluetooth headset, a hi-fi module, a camera grip with an integrated battery, a 360-degree camera; VR glasses that can be connected to the smartphone via USB-C; a Sphero-like surveillance robot with a camera and an action cam.

LG Home Entertainment (TV / Audio / Video)

LG Electronics Home Entertainment is a manufacturer of screens, in the year 2000 still in tube technology and meanwhile of flat screens and AV products for end users and business customers. The product range includes OLED , LED / LCD and plasma televisions , home theater systems, Blu-ray players as well as audio and video players.

Internet-enabled televisions from the company, it was discovered by chance, send unencrypted information to the manufacturer even after the relevant function has been switched off. These can be the set channel, the inserted DVD or information about files on data storage media connected to the television. This is made possible by the HbbTV standard , which regulates the connection between television and Internet content. It is certain that LG used this information about the audience in front of the respective television set to create personalized advertising. For this "feature", which became known in 2013, LG Electronics received the Big Brother Award in 2014 in the consumer protection category .

This transfer of user data was partially depicted as obsolete by the company itself. Personal files on external data carriers should not be spied on, and the fact that the transfer could not be switched off was an error. However, according to the LG, it is intended to transfer viewing habits by default to match advertising to the group of users of the respective television.
