The cowboy Johnny Walker is an aging boxer . After a win he hopes for a big comeback. However, he has to take a break due to a serious injury and is therefore traveling. He met the carousel owner Ruby at a fair. Johnny falls in love with Ruby and his feelings are reciprocated. His friend and promoter Wesley has other plans and asks him to fight the fight so he can carry out a bank robbery. Johnny now has to decide whether to help his boyfriend with the bank robbery or stay with Ruby, his new girlfriend, as an injury can be fatal. When Wesley carries out the bank robbery, Johnny is in the ring.

The production was carried out by Cinema International . The exterior shots were taken in Asbury Park , New Jersey , while the interior shots were in the Convention Hall at the same location. In the film The Wrestler , Mickey Rourke was again filming as an athlete at the same location.

Homeboy was distributed on VHS by International Video Entertainment and Lions Gate Films Home Entertainment , the subsidiary of Lions Gate Entertainment , has been distributing the film on DVD since 2009 .

Publications

The boxing drama was released in France on August 24, 1988. On September 15, 1988, Homeboy was released in the United States. The following year the film was released in Portugal (March 17), Finland (April 7), Sweden (June 30) and Germany (September 7). On September 1, 2009, the film was released on DVD.

Trivia

  • Debra Feuer , Johnny Walker's mistress , was Mickey Rourke's wife at the time.
  • Homeboy is the first film written by Mickey Rourke. In the credits, however, he is mentioned as Sir Eddie Cook , as in his subsequent films.
