Horst Engel (soccer player)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Horst Engel (born November 25, 1943 ) is a former German soccer player. As an active member of HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst and Concordia Hamburg , he played 323 league games from 1963 to 1974 in what was then the second -rate regional soccer league, making him the record player in the northern league.

career

Horst Engel went through all youth stations at Barmbek-Uhlenhorst. From the beginning of 1963 to the end of 1974 he was an active member of the second-rate regional football league North. On August 11, 1963, the day the football league started , the 19-year-old stormed off Wilhelm-Rupprecht-Platz as a center forward for the blue and yellow team. In the 2-1 home win against SC Concordia Hamburg, the young attacker scored the interim 1-1 equalizer for BU in the 35th minute of the game. At the end of the round, Barmbek was relegated to the amateur league and Engel joined the Red-Blacks from the Marienthal Stadium , the SC Concordia Hamburg , for the 1964/65 round . Under coach Martin Wilke , "Cordi" finished ninth in 1965 and Engel was a member of the regular formation. From the season he experienced the derbies against his hometown club from Barmbek, since BU had reached the return to the regional league in 1966. In this round Concordia ranked 6th and had also won both games (3: 0/5: 0) against BU. But the successes against St. Pauli (1: 0) and VfL Wolfsburg (2: 1) also contributed to the good result. Engel now often played as a right outside runner. In his fourth season with Concordia, 1967/68, it was only enough for the 13th place with 23:41 points - both games against BU were lost - and Engel rejoined his home club for the 1968/69 round.

In the meantime, mainly driven by the league chairman and patron Hermann Sanne, the staff with Erhard Schwerin , Willi Giesemann , Jürgen Wien, Werner Baumann, Horst Stolzenburg, Karl-Heinz Baumann and Manfred Fink had been upgraded vigorously and with Adolf Remy also a new trainer in Office. The hoped-for way into the front half of the table did not succeed with 10th place. In spite of the other newcomers Rolf Höfert , Jürgen Jaacks and Manfred Rabe , the new coach "Edu" Preuss was not able to advance in the 1969/70 BU series either. In the two derbies against St. Pauli - 1: 1 and 2: 0 victory for BU - Engel played in midfield. The leap into the top group was achieved in 1970/71, not least through the offensive reinforcements Jürgen Dudda , Klaus Fock , Horst Howing and the veteran Ernst Kreuz . In the 9-1 home win against SV Meppen on February 28, 1971 Horst Engel formed the attack with Fock and Dudda and scored three goals. VfL Osnabrück won the championship with 44:24 points and BU had to be content with fifth place with 41:27 points. Nevertheless, Reinhold Ertel, a new coach, came to Steilshooper Strasse for the 1971/72 round . Engel and colleagues had to cope with the departure of striker Fock to KFC Beeringen, but still improved their point balance compared to the previous year. With 45:23 points, BU took fourth place, tied with VfL Wolfsburg in third place. The home game against the sovereign champions FC St. Pauli was watched by 15,000 spectators on October 17, 1971. Engel stormed on the right wing. He contributed both goals to the 2-0 home win against Sperber Hamburg on November 21. In the last two rounds of the old second-rate regional league, 1973 and 1974, the league's record player and his teammates each finished fifth. Now he also had Helmut Sandmann and Gert Dörfel as players on the pitch. On March 31, 1974 BU defied the Bundesliga relegated and clear championship favorites Eintracht Braunschweig from a 1-1 draw. Engel acted in the 4: 4: 2 system in midfield. With his use on the 38th matchday, May 5, 1974, in the 0-0 draw at Bremerhaven 93 , Engel finished the chapter of the North Regional Football League after eleven rounds and 323 league appearances. BU had qualified for the newly installed 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season, but the record player in the regional league joined Vorwärts Billstedt in the amateur camp for the 1974/75 round and thus ended his higher-class career.
