Horst Kohl (historian)

Horst Ernst Arminius Kohl (born May 19, 1855 in Waldheim ; † May 2, 1917 in Leipzig ) was a German educator and historian .

Life

Horst Kohl attended the high school in Chemnitz from 1861 to 1868 and, from 1864, the Progymnasium there. From Easter 1868 to 1872 he was a student at the grammar school in Zwickau and then switched to the grammar school in Chemnitz, where he acquired the school leaving certificate. From 1874 he studied philology and history at the University of Leipzig and in Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1876 ​​at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig under his teacher Georg Voigt on the subject of ten years of Gothic history from the death of Theodoric the Great to the elevation of Vitigis and passed the state examination in 1877 . After completing the probationary period at the Nikolaischule in Leipzig and a teaching position at the secondary school in Chemnitz, he became a senior teacher at the Royal High School in Chemnitz from Easter 1880 and was given the title of professor in 1896. In 1903 Kohl moved to the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig, where he worked from 1906 as vice rector and from 1911 as a teacher.

As a historian, he was a research assistant at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica from 1876 to 1877 . After that he dealt mainly with the history of the 19th century, especially with Prince Bismarck, and published several times about this. After his dismissal in 1890, Kohl Bismarck temporarily served as a journalist.

Honors

A street in the Bismarck district of Berlin-Steglitz was named after him.
