Müller was active for SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal and was particularly successful in the 1970s in both single and double sledges. In 1975 a silver medal was added in Hammarstrand , which he won together with Hans-Jürgen Neumann behind the victorious GDR double Bernd and Ulrich Hahn . The same place was achieved by the Müller / Neumann doubles at the European Luge Championships in Olang in 1975 , where they had to admit defeat to their compatriots Hans Rinn and Norbert Hahn . At the Luge World Championships in 1977 in Igls , Müller again won a silver medal behind Hans Rinn.

At the GDR championships in 1972, Müller won his first national medal with a bronze medal, with A. Hahn in a two-seater behind Horst Hörnlein and Reinhard Bredow as well as Klaus Bonsack and Wolfram Fiedler . In 1974 he was second behind Hans Rinn in the single seater, in 1975 he won the doubles title with Hans-Jürgen Neumann ahead of Rinn / Hahn and Hahn / Hahn. In Oberhof the doubles achieved a total time of 1: 29.56 minutes.
