Mittelberg is a municipality in Austria in Vorarlberg in the judicial district of Bezau , Bregenz district with 5054 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and, like Lech , Damüls or Ebnit, is one of the Vorarlberg Walser villages . As a geographical exclave, it is identical to the Kleinwalsertal .
geography
Mittelberg can only be reached by road via Bavaria , i.e. the national territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, and is therefore also referred to as a functional exclave .
Mittelberg is located in the Allgäu Alps , which are part of the northern Eastern Alps. The highest point is the Great Widderstein ( 2536 m ). The Kleinwalsertal is cut off from the rest of Austria's territory.
The Breitach is the largest stream in the municipality. It flows through all three villages and absorbs the water from the side streams. In Mittelberg, streams like Derrabach, Turabach, Bärgundbach, Gemstelbach and Wildenbach feed the Breitach and its side streams.
The main mountains of Mittelberg include:
- Elfer ( 2387 m )
- Bärenkopf ( 2083 m )
- Walmendingerhorn ( 1990 m )
- Widderstein ( 2536 m )
- Zwölfer ( 2224 m )
Community structure
The municipality includes the following three localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):
- Hirschegg (1368)
- Mittelberg (1643)
- Riezlern (2043)
The municipality consists of the only cadastral municipality Mittelberg and includes the three localities or counting districts and villages Hirschegg , Mittelberg with Baad (this village is usually run as a separate municipality part) and Riezlern (main town).

Neighboring communities

history
The region was settled in 1270 by the Walsers who came from Switzerland and belong to the Alemanni ethnic group. Due to this origin, the inhabitants still differ from those of the surrounding communities in terms of language. Their dialect is assigned to the highest Alemannic dialects, while in the Allgäu a Lower Alemannic dialect and in the rest of Vorarlberg a High Alemannic dialect (Vorarlbergerisch) is spoken.
Population development
The population fell between 1991 and 2001 due to a negative birth balance (−180) and a negative migration balance (−141). From 2001 to 2011 there was a very high level of immigration.
politics
Community representation
The community council consists of 24 members. After the municipal council and mayoral elections in 2015 :
- 12 mandates for Mayor Andi Haid and open citizen list VP Kleinwalsertal ( ÖVP )
- 6 mandates Walser list
- FPÖ ) 3 mandates of the Free Walser Citizens List (
- 3 mandates Initiative Pro Kleinwalsertal
Acting mayor of the community is Andi Haid from the ÖVP , who was confirmed in office in the direct mayor election 2015 with 76.4% of the votes.
Community name and coat of arms
Since the village of Mittelberg was the first of the three villages in Kleinwalsertal to be settled, and later to be the seat of the court (but the seat of the court was ultimately Hirschegg ), the community bears the name Mittelberg. The nominal municipality capital today is not Mittelberg, but Riezlern . There have been efforts in the past to change the community name to Kleinwalsertal . On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the other two localities have developed equally, and on the other hand, that the name Kleinwalsertal, in contrast to Mittelberg , has established itself in the population. However, these efforts have not been able to prevail to this day.
Blazon (coat of arms description):
- “A blue shield from the bottom of which rises a rock on which stands an erect, natural ibex ; behind the rock is a high, green mountain cone that converges to a point. Rocks and mountain cones are overgrown with leg pines .
The shield is surrounded by a bronze-colored, ornamented border . "
The coat of arms shown on the right is the representation used by the municipality. It does not precisely follow the blazon. The left is a heraldically correct form, which is shown by the Vorarlberger Landesarchiv. In both illustrations, only the shield, not the frame, is redrawn.
The coat of arms is the former coat of arms of the Mittelberg court , so the Kleinwalsertal - unlike some Großwalsertal communities - does not have the Walserstern. The ibex has been found in the seal of the “freyen Walser court” since 1431. It was confirmed as the municipal coat of arms on April 5, 1929 by the Vorarlberg state government.
The ibex as heraldic animal is also used by Sonntag (1966), Dünserberg (1969), Bürserberg (1970) and St. Gerold (1970), as well as - not Walser - in Vorarlberg also Hohenems .
Economy and Infrastructure
Due to its geographical location, the municipality was connected to the German economic area in 1891 as a customs connection area.
tourism
The Walmendingerhornbahn , built in 1966, opens up a 43 km hiking area in summer and a ski area with two additional chairlifts in winter. The valley station is not far from the center of Mittelberg at 1200 m above sea level. A. The mountain railway ends at 1996 m above sea level. A. just below the summit of the Walmendingerhorn .
education
In the community there are elementary schools in Mittelberg, Hirschegg and Riezlern, as well as a middle school with an adjoining polytechnic school. There is also a special school in the Riezlern school center.
Club sport
Because of the geographic location, some sports clubs take part in games in Germany. The women's table tennis team of the SV Casino Kleinwalsertal competed in the Bavarian League in the 1980s and even became champion of the 2nd German Bundesliga in 2003.
