Howard Green
Howard Green (born September 10, 1925 in Toronto , † October 31, 2015 in Westwood , Massachusetts ) was an American cell and developmental biologist . He was a professor at Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts.
Green researched human embryonic stem cells and their differentiation , especially in keratinocytes . For the first time he was able to use cultured cells for the therapy of severely burned patients, who are not suitable for normal skin transplants . Green's method is widely used on very severe burns.
Green earned an MD from the University of Toronto in Toronto , Canada. The first independent scientific station was the New York University School of Medicine in New York City , New York , where he finally received a professorship and headed the department of cell biology. Between 1970 and 1980, Green was Professor of Cell Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge , Massachusetts , before moving to Harvard University Medical School , also located in Cambridge , where he headed the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology until 1993 . Since 1993 he was there George Higginson Professor of Cell Biology .
