Howard Lucraft

Howard Lucraft (born August 16, 1916 in Finchley , London , † February 4, 2011 in Long Beach (California) ) was a British guitarist, orchestra conductor, arranger , composer and journalist .

Live and act

Lucraft attended Tollington Park College and studied at UCLA, California . In England he became known as an orchestra leader for the BBC when he played with his own formations on national radio. He also composed and arranged for shows on the BBC under his direction. He moved to the United States in the 1950s, where he worked as a composer and arranger in the music industry for radio, television, advertising, and record labels. His compositions and arrangements were u. a. Recorded by Stan Kenton , Anita O'Day , Ray Noble and in Los Angeles by the television stations KTTV and KABC. Lucraft's "Los Angeles Jazz Suite" premiered at the Hollywood Bowl ; Art Pepper , Teddy Edwards , Frank Rosolino , Bill Perkins , Pete Jolly , Red Mitchell and Stan Levey played in his Hollywood All-Stars . He recorded with his bands for Decca Records ( Showcase For Modern Jazz ) and had television and radio appearances. His show show Jazz International was broadcast on the American Forces Network .

Lucraft also worked as the Californian representative of the London agency Odhams Press, wrote for the Daily Herald and its successor The Sun for twenty years , eleven of which he worked for the advertising department. Then he wrote under the pseudonym Luc for the magazine Variety , where he had the column Under and Overtones , u. a. about film, music and advertising. In addition, his contributions have appeared in music magazines such as Down Beat , Jazz Journal International , JazzTimes , Melody Maker , Metronome as well as in the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, Los Angeles Times and Overture. Since 1953 he was a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and was president of the Hollywood Press Club three times . He was also a member of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers (ASMAC), the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (AFTRA), and the Motion Picture Association of America .

Leonard Feather said after a concert of the Lucraft Septet in 1974 that he was "a music critic who can practice what he preaches."
