Oliver Howard Vaughton (born January 9, 1861 in Aston , Birmingham , † January 6, 1937 in Birmingham) was an English football player . The English cup winner of 1887 became known together with Arthur Brown as the first national player in the history of Aston Villa .

Athletic career

Vaughton, who primarily played the half-left striker position and left winger, learned to play football at FC Waterloo before moving to Aston Villa in 1880 via the Small Heath Alliance (now: "Birmingham City") and the Wednesbury Strollers.

Between 1880 and 1888 he played 26 FA Cup games and scored 15 goals. His greatest success was winning the English Cup in 1887, when he was in the final in the 2-0 winning team against West Bromwich Albion . He formed an effective duo with Dennis Hodgetts , especially on the left ; he had previously played mostly with Eli Davis . The goal danger fluctuated at Vaughton in the offensive lineup, which was often dominated by the ubiquitous center forward and team captain Archie Hunter . In a national championship round , which was created by the establishment of the Football League for the 1888/89 season , Vaughton no longer took part. A serious thigh injury forced him to retire in May 1888.

Vaughton is best known today as Aston Villa's first (senior) international. On his debut in Belfast on February 18, 1882, he scored five goals for a clear 13-0 win over Ireland . His teammate Arthur Brown scored another four goals in this game. With those five goals Vaughton is to this day the record holder for the English national team for the most goals in just one game. His second international match against Scotland , however, was marked by significantly less success. Although he managed to score again, the clear 5-1 defeat could not be prevented. After two more defeats, he said goodbye on March 17, 1884 with a 4-0 win over Wales from the English selection, where he scored no more goals in the last three games.

In addition to soccer, Howard Vaughton was also successful in other sports. Among other things, he played cricket for the selection teams of the counties of Staffordshire and Shropshire . He was national champion in ice skating; He also practiced cycling and hockey .

After football

Vaughton worked as a silversmith after his active football career . After the original FA Cup was stolen from a Birmingham sports shop in 1895 - Aston Villa had just won the trophy and was on display in the shop window - Vaughton's company was entrusted with the faithful reproduction of the FA Cup.

Vaughton was President of Aston Villa between 1924 and 1932. He had to end his engagement because of an illness. Almost five years later he died in his hometown of Birmingham. There is now a street named after the Vaughton family, who have extensive connections there.

With Jonny Vaughton a descendant of Howard later became a successful player in rugby union and participant in the Commonwealth Games 2006 in Australia.
