The Mr. Ms. de Ruyter (full Dutch name: Mr. Ms. Pantserschip De Ruyter ) was a small Dutch ship of the line or coastal armored ship of the early 20th century . She was commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1902 and was the sixth ship to be named after Admiral Michiel de Ruyter . She undertook trips to the Dutch West Indies as well as the Dutch East Indies and then served in the latter area as the fleet flagship for East Asia .

The ship was equipped with a 50 mm thick arched armored deck that reached 1.3 m below the waterline . The waterline was protected by belt armor made of nickel steel 150 to 100 mm thick, which reached from the lower edge of the armored deck up to 0.6 m above the waterline. The armament consisted of ten rapid-fire cannons of different calibers (2x 24 cm, 4x 15 cm, 8x 7.5 cm, 4x 37 mm) as well as 3 torpedo tubes with six torpedoes . The drive system consisted of 2 triple expansion steam engines with direct drive which enabled a maximum speed of 16 kn (29.63 km / h). The ship had electrical lighting, watertight bulkheads and forced ventilation of the interior via two fans. The displacement was 5000 tons.

history

The keel laying of De Ruyter took place on 12. May 1900 . On 28. September 1901 the was launched instead.

The official commissioning was on October 29, 1902 under the command of Captain of the Sea ( KtZ ) AC van der Sande Lacoste. The Mr. Ms. De Ruyter traveled to the Dutch West Indies as well as the Dutch East Indies . She drove missions in East Asia and took part in the Boni expedition there in 1905 and an expedition against Bali in 1906 . From 1918 to 1919 she served as a squadron flagship of the fleet in the Dutch East Indies.

Whereabouts

The ship was decommissioned in 1919 after returning to the Netherlands and sold to the Reichswerft (Dutch: Rijkswerf ) in Den Helder for scrapping in 1924 .
