Hugo Staudinger (born July 5, 1921 in Dresden ; † September 3, 2004 in Paderborn ) was a German historian and scientific theorist .

Life

Hugo Staudinger grew up in Dresden and attended the St. Benno high school there . After graduating from high school in 1940, he studied theoretical physics at the TH Dresden until he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . He did military service in Russia and on the Western Front.

In 1947 he returned from British captivity and took up studies again. At the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , which was reopened after the destruction , he now studied history , philosophy , Latin and theology and passed his first state examination in history, philosophy and Latin. In 1950 he was with the work world order and constitution at Otto of Freising at the Philosophical Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University doctorate .

After completing the pedagogical examination in 1952, he was accepted into the higher education service of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . He taught at the Mariengymnasium Werl ( Soest district ). During this time he also became a specialist advisor to the school inspectorate for contemporary history. 1962 Staudinger was appointed Professor of Political Education and Teaching of History at the University of Education Paderborn appointed . After founding the University of Paderborn , he taught at the same as a full university professor.

Hugo Staudinger had been married to Hilde Staudinger, née Kröger, since 1951. The marriage had six children.

Act

In 1963, the Bayerische Schulbuch Verlag published the three-volume historical work entitled Our Story - Our World , which Staudinger had written together with the historians Heribert Hilgenberg and Elmar Wagner.

As early as June 1, 1958, Staudinger, together with former colleagues and interested like-minded people , founded the German Institute for Education and Knowledge (DIBW) in Frankfurt am Main , the main office of which was later relocated to Paderborn. In its statutes, the institute had set itself the goal of "imparting the knowledge of our time to people in a meaningful way, opening their eyes to reality as a whole and thereby enabling comprehensive education". In order to do justice to this mandate, the institute brought together scientists from all disciplines and subject areas in working groups and larger conferences, each of which had a specific topic.

The experience gained here resulted in the desire for an own research center. In 1970 Staudinger founded the Institute for Basic Scientific Research and developed a new method of interdisciplinary and interdenominational collaboration for this purpose. For many years he was director of this institute.

After the smashing of National Socialism , a new spiritual orientation was required in society , politics and science . With the now inflowing educational, ideological and scientific influences, new difficulties arose for the spiritual orientation of the people. Staudinger sought to meet them in various fields.

He turned against the claim of totalitarian world views and rejected educational relativism, dealt with Max Horkheimer and the Frankfurt School and dealt with current historical, philosophical and scientific questions. In the center of his activity, however, more and more basic anthropological questions emerged, which he sought to answer from the basis of the Christian message. Ultimately, he was concerned with the metaphysical background of human existence.

As a result of the institute's research work, 16 books were published, some of which were written by Staudinger alone and some in collaboration with members of the institute. There were also numerous essays and many lectures. Staudinger's last essay entitled Mythos and History appeared a few weeks before his death (September 3, 2004) in the ibw-Journal , the journal that has been published six times a year by the Institute for Education and Knowledge for 43 years.

About one and a half years after his death, the Institute for Education and Knowledge was dissolved with effect from December 31, 2005 and the ibw journal was discontinued.

Due to his services, Staudinger was an honorary member of the German Institute for Education and Knowledge and Commander of the Papal New Year's Eve . On March 23, 1992 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
