Hugo Wilhelm Isidor Oskar von Strempel (born September 17, 1831 in Tremessen ( Mogilno district ), † September 24, 1897 in Walmen (St. Avold district)) was a royal Prussian general of the infantry and most recently commander of the 2nd division .

Life

origin

His parents were the Justizrat Friedrich Wilhelm Strempel (* April 2, 1803; † May 28, 1850) and his wife Cäcilie, née Douglas (* June 29, 1803).

Career

He received his education at the grammar school in Memel and went after his graduation on November 21, 1848 as a volunteer in the 1st infantry regiment. There he was appointed portepeef ensign on June 6, 1849 and transferred to the 8th Infantry Regiment as a second lieutenant on August 10, 1850. Assigned to the 3rd Combined Reserve Battalion from April 1, 1852 to March 31, 1853, and to the 3rd Engineer Division from May 1 to July 31, 1853. He was then posted to the General War School from October 1, 1854 to June 30, 1857 . Immediately afterwards, from July 1 to September 30, 1857, he was assigned to the 2nd pioneer division. After his return he was promoted to investigative officer on December 15, 1857 and on May 31, 1859 to Premier-Lieutenant. On June 1, 1859, he was appointed regimental adjutant. During the mobilization of 1859 he came as an adjutant in the General Command of III. Army Corps. Then he came on September 21, 1859 as an adjutant in the 8th Landwehr Regiment. From there he came to the topological department of the General Staff on May 1, 1860 , and was promoted to captain on March 5, 1863. Finally he was transferred from October 1, 1863 to September 30, 1865 as a teacher at the United Artillery and Engineering School . During this time he took part in the German-Danish War in 1864. From October 1, 1865 to September 30, 1866 he was a teacher at the General War Academy .

During the German War of 1866 he was in the main headquarters and took part in the battle of Königgrätz . For this he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords on September 20, 1866 , and on October 30, 1866, he was transferred to the General Staff as a major. From there he was transferred to the General Staff of the IV Army Corps on August 6, 1867. In the run-up to the Franco-Prussian War , he joined the 81st Infantry Regiment on June 9, 1870 as a battalion commander. On July 16, 1870 he was aggregated into the General Staff and assigned to the staff of the Army Department of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg. During the campaign he took part in the sieges of Metz , Toul , Soissons and Paris . He also fought in the battles at Loigny , Orleans and Beaugency and the battles at Dreux, Chateauneuf, La Loupe, La-Ferte-Bernard, Meung, Morec and Freteval. For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on November 1, 1870 . On December 26, 1870 he was appointed representative of the Chief of the General Staff in the VI. Army corps detached.

After the war he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st class on August 8, 1871, and on August 18, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. On October 3, 1871 he was then Chief of the General Staff of the VI. Army corps confirmed and promoted to colonel on September 2, 1873. He was also raised to the Prussian nobility on September 18, 1875.

He came on January 11, 1876 as a commander in the 40th Infantry Regiment and was awarded the Order of the Crown, 2nd Class , on September 15, 1877 . On April 6, 1880, he joined the 5th Infantry Brigade as commander and was promoted to major general at the same time. Awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves and Swords , on January 14, 1883 . On April 18, 1885 he was transferred to the 2nd Division as commander and at the same time promoted to lieutenant general. He received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle on January 23, 1887 and was put up for retirement on July 3, 1888 . On the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Orleans he received on 2 December 1895 Character as General of Infantry and died on 24 September 1897 in hipping (county St.Avold).

The general was tirelessly active and had a high level of self-confidence. He was considered an excellent commander, but also a difficult subordinate and superior. As the commander of the 2nd division, he clashed with Lieutenant General von Alten in Danzig . Although technically not wrong, the tone must have been violent, the matter went as far as the Kaiser and Strempel received a sharp reprimand. His next argument was with General von Kleist , but this time the Kaiser declined to interfere.

family

Strempel married on May 8, 1866 in Frankfurt an der Oder Theodora Mirianne Hermine von Gerlach (April 1, 1845, † July 20, 1873), a daughter of the secret councilor Johann Heinrich Eduard von Gerlach . The couple had several children:
