Ewald Christian Leopold von Kleist (born March 25, 1824 in Stolp in West Pomerania ; † December 29, 1910 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian infantry general and chief of the infantry regiment "Graf Dönhoff" (7th East Prussian) No. 44 .

Ewald von Kleist was a member of the Pomeranian noble family von Kleist and the youngest son of the major a. D. , last in the 1st Guards Regiment on foot , and postmaster of Stolp Leopold Friedrich von Kleist (1780–1837) and his wife Wilhelmine Agnes Friederike, née von Blanckensee (1788–1867).

Military career

Kleist was educated from 1836 to 1838 in the Kulmer Kadettenanstalt and then until 1841 in the Kadettenhaus in Berlin. On August 12, 1841, he joined the 1st Guards Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant and participated in the suppression of the revolution during the street fighting in Berlin in March 1848 . In 1861 he became the commander of the non-commissioned officers' school in Potsdam. In 1863 Kleist was promoted to major . As an adjutant at the high command of the allied army in Schleswig-Holstein, Kleist took part in the German-Danish War in 1864 in the assault on the Düppeler Schanzen and the transition to Alsen . For this he received the Red Eagle Order IV. Class with Swords.

In 1866 Kleist commanded the 1st battalion of his regiment, with which he participated in the battles at Soor , Queen's Court and the Battle of Königgrätz during the war against Austria . Kleist received the Pour le Mérite on September 20, 1866 for his achievements . In 1868 he became commander of the Mecklenburg Grenadier Regiment No. 89 and the following year he was promoted to colonel on June 18, 1869 . As such, Kleist then took part in the sieges of Metz , Toul and Paris during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870/71 and fought at Dreux , la Madeleine, Bouvet, Villorceau, Connerée and the Battle of Le Mans . Awarded the two classes of the Iron Cross , Kleist led his regiment back to the garrison after the end of the war. For his services, the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg awarded him the Commander-in-Chief of the House Order of the Wendish Crown on March 29, 1873 .

On September 2, 1873 Kleist gave up command, was promoted to major general and transferred to the army officers. He then became commander of the 41st Infantry Brigade on October 16, 1873. With his promotion to lieutenant general on February 8, 1880, he was appointed commander of the 1st Guard Division , which he commanded until May 31, 1885. Then Kleist was commanding general of the 1st Army Corps in Königsberg and in this position was promoted to General of the Infantry on September 18, 1886.

At his request, on May 11, 1889, Kleist was put up for disposal by Wilhelm II with the award of the Grand Cross of the Red Eagle Order with the statutory pension . On January 11, 1896, he received the diamonds for the Grand Cross of the Red Eagle Order with Oak Leaves and Swords and in 1901 he celebrated his 60th anniversary in service.
