Viktor Karl Ferdinand von Alten (born May 15, 1821 in Tecklenburg , † April 9, 1890 in Vilz ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of Danzig .

Life

Viktor was the third son of the Hanoverian captain Georg von Alten (1779-1854) and his wife Karoline, born von der Hagen (1786-1863).

Military career

After visiting the cadets houses in Potsdam and Berlin old was on 15 August 1838 as the Sergeant of the 30th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army transferred. After his transfer to the Guard Reserve Infantry (Landwehr) Regiment , he was promoted to an aggregated secondary lieutenant in mid-February 1842 and was posted in mid-August. In mid-April 1848 he was given command, first as leader of a hunter company and then as adjutant of the general command to the Schleswig-Holstein troops. During the war against Denmark, Alten took part in the battles near Schleswig , Kolding , Idstedt , Atzbüll , Gravenstein , Viuf , Alminde , Gubsö and Missunde as well as the sieges of Fredericia and Friedrichstadt .

In mid-November 1849 Alten took his leave of the Prussian army and was employed as captain 1st class in the general staff of the general command of the Schleswig-Holstein army . After the army was disbanded on April 1, 1851, he resigned on August 16, 1851 and returned to Prussian service on June 22, 1852 as Prime Lieutenant in the 32nd Infantry Regiment . In the years 1853/54 Alten was briefly assigned to the 4th Pioneer Division and the 6th Uhlan Regiment . On July 1, 1855 he was commanded as a company commander at III. Battalion in the 32nd Landwehr Regiment in Naumburg (Saale) and in early January 1858 he was promoted to captain. This command was interrupted from September 1858 to August 1859 by being a company commander in the 4th Combined Reserve Battalion. In mid-November 1859 Alten was appointed company commander in the 32nd Infantry Regiment, in this capacity transferred to the Brandenburg Fusilier Regiment No. 35 in early January 1866 and promoted to major in early April . In the war against Austria he led his company at Münchengrätz and Königgrätz , after the peace treaty in September 1866 he was commander of the 1st battalion, which belonged to the occupation of Dresden , and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords.

During the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Alten was promoted to lieutenant colonel and demonstrated his battalion at Vionville , Gravelotte , Artenay , St. Germain-le-Grand, Chilleurs-aux-Bois , Vaumainbert, Vendôme , Azay, Montaillé and Le Mans as well Metz . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , after the Peace of Frankfurt on August 22, 1871, he was entrusted with the command of the Pomeranian Fusilier Regiment No. 34 under position à la suite . From November 4, 1871 to September 14, 1876, Alten was the commander of this regiment, rose to the rank of colonel in the meantime and was then assigned to command the 25th Infantry Brigade in Münster under a position à la suite . With the award of the Crown Order of the First Class, he was put up for disposal on February 5, 1887 with a pension in approval of his resignation .

He died on April 9, 1890 in Vilz.

Alten married Emma von Reuss (1827–1894) on December 2, 1849. The couple had several children:
