Background information on the songs
- Are you ready? was the last single by Human Clay and was also released on the NASCAR sampler Full Throttle (2001) and the Harley Davidson sampler Ride (2005).
- What If is about all those who criticized the songs of the debut album My Own Prison and denied the band any future prospects despite their success: What if your words could be judged like a crime? (in German: "What if your words could be judged as a crime?"). The song was released as the second single and also used for the soundtrack of Scream 3 , in the production of which Creed took part. In the accompanying video, David Arquette plays the security officer of a film studio, on whose set the killer Ghostface haunts. The band members who are also on set with their companions are apparently killed one by one.
- Beautiful is Scott Stapp's reckoning with an ex-girlfriend who first dumped him and wanted to win back after the band's first successes.
- Faceless Man : A common interpretation of the text among fans is that the "Faceless Man" (in German: Faceless Man) is about Jesus. Singer Scott Stapp would like to leave the interpretation open. On his solo album The Great Divide , released in 2005, he again refers to the Faceless Man: “So here I stand alone again, talking to my faceless friend” (in German: And so I stand here by myself again, speaking to my faceless friend ).
- With Arms Wide Open : Scott Stapp wrote the lyrics when he found out that he was going to be a father. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a week in November 2000 . The accompanying video reached number 1 on the VH1 video charts and was voted number four of the 25 best power ballads by the broadcaster. At the Grammy Awards 2001 , the song was named "Best Rock Song" of the year. A limited single version was released in favor of the organization "With Arms Wide Open Foundation" founded by Scott Stapp.
- Higher is the first single from Human Clay . The song is about lucid dreams . Stapp had used this technique to get rid of a nightmare and to finish off his experience report.
reception
Similar to its predecessor, the album was very well received by critics and fans. Buffo Schnädelbach awarded 9 out of 10 possible points in the Rock Hard magazine . The following criticism was printed: “In the USA the guys from Tallahassee / Florida have long since taken the orphaned throne of the former grunge flagship Pearl Jam. Almost four million copies of her brilliant My Own Prison debut sold in the land of opportunity alone speak for themselves. Creed have set the bar very high, not only musically but also commercially. Nevertheless, the second work of the Christian-influenced combo fully lives up to the high expectations at every second. Especially in terms of production, the melancholic quartet with its fragile to powerful sound was able to add a few shovels somewhere in the intersection between Soundgarden, the Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam. And in terms of music, Creed once again demonstrate their outstanding songwriting skills on Human Clay . The absolute highlight are the ballads, like on the debut, of which the band has four (all of them potential hit singles / hymns with depth) at the start with Faceless Man , Arms Wide Open , Higher , Wash Away Those Years and Inside Us All . But also harder tunes like Are You Ready , What If and the international (?) Bonus track Young Grow Old are not without it. And the introverted, melancholy front tube proves on almost every track that Scott Stapp is justifiably being treated as the new Eddie Vedder. Human Clay is not only balm for the psyche, but also the light at the end of the tunnel for all souls plagued by heartache and other depressions. For this, in addition to nine full points, a very personal thank you goes across the pond! "
Human Clay was awarded 11 platinum by the RIAA, making it one of the 100 best-selling albums in the United States . In total, the album sold over 11 million units.
