Virgin Hyperloop One (formerly Hyperloop One and Hyperloop Technologies ) is a US company working on the development and implementation of the Hyperloop concept. Hyperloop One is planning a high-speed transport system with capsules in a vacuum tube (see also vacuum tunnel ), which should reach speeds of up to 1200 km / h. The concept of the Hyperloop was introduced by Elon Musk in a white paper in August 2013 , but the company Hyperloop One is neither under his direction nor is it owned. The company is headquartered in Los Angeles , California , United States .

history

The idea for Hyperloop One came about during a conversation between Elon Musk and venture capitalist Shervin Pishevar when they flew together on a humanitarian mission to Cuba in January 2012. Pishevar asked Musk, his ideas about the concept of hyper Loops to explain closer, Musk privately employed with for some time. Pishevar suggested using the Hyperloop for freight transport as well, although Musk planned to mainly carry people ( passenger transport ). Musk, however, was so involved through his work at Tesla and SpaceX that he did not have time to implement another project in the form of the Hyperloop. Pishevar offered Musk that he would take care of the project himself, which Musk did not respond to at first.

In May 2013, when Musk gave an interview as part of the AllThingsD conference, Pishevar asked Musk in a question and answer session to tell the audience more about his idea of the hyperloop. Musk explained his concept and reluctantly promised the audience that he would publish a report on his idea in August 2013.

With the publication of the white paper in August 2013, the concept was practically open source and the further development and ultimate implementation of the Hyperloop is driven by the competition of individual, independent project teams.

Shervin Pishevar, Josh Giegel and Brogan BamBrogan founded Hyperloop One, then Hyperloop Technologies, in June 2014.

In addition to Hyperloop One, as of September 2017, three other companies are working on the implementation of the Hyperloop concept. On the one hand there are Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) by the German Dirk Ahlborn, on the other hand the Canadian “Transpod”. The third company that is working on the high-speed means of transport is "Arrivo, The Arrival Company", which was founded by former employees of Hyperloop One. The four former managers left Hyperloop One after internal disputes and founded their own start-up in early 2017 .

In mid-July 2017, according to Hyperloop One, a speed of 113 km / h was achieved for the first time, at the beginning of August 2017 it was 305 km / h (test sled of the 500-meter-long test tube "DevLoop") and in December 2017 it was 387 km / h.

implementation

To implement the project, Hyperloop One maintains partnerships with consultants, architecture and engineering firms. The partners also include the consulting arm of Deutsche Bahn , DB Engineering and Consulting, the Swiss tunneling company Amberg Group, the British engineering office Arup and the French engineering office Systra , as a joint subsidiary of SNCF and RATP .

Planned routes

In May 2016, Hyperloop One started the “Hyperloop One Global Challenge”, in which teams around the world were asked to submit suggestions for possible routes. The semifinals included 35 suggested routes, of which a connection in Germany between Hamburg and Berlin made it to the finals.

On September 14, 2017, Hyperloop One published ten routes that had won the tender and are now to be built. The ten planned routes are in the United States , Canada , Mexico , Great Britain, and India .

financing

Since its inception, as of September 2017, Hyperloop One has been able to raise venture capital totaling 245 million US dollars. In the first round of funding, also known as Series A round , Hyperloop One received a total of $ 11.1 million. The main investor was Sherpa Capital , a venture capital company led by Shervin Pishevar and Scott Stanford . In the second round of financing, 19 additional investors from around the world were added, including SNCF , the French state railway company.
