Anette Klinger, a widowed and lonely factory owner, meets the gas station attendant Nikolei Stein one day. She falls in love with him, Nikolei knows how to snuggle up to her. In truth, however, the man is an unscrupulous fraud who is after Anette's money. At night he arranged an accident on the motorway. Anette believes she killed a cyclist, but only because Nikolei gets out of the car and then claims that the man is dead. In reality, he hired him. He persuades Anette to run away, wins her affection and gets money out of her again and again. Later he pays a certain Hinze who appears as a detective. Nikolei puts Anette under more and more psychological pressure and the desperate woman does everything in her love that he demands of her. Eventually they set off on a trip to the Orient, where Anette is pushed to the brink of suicide. At the last second she can be saved as Dr. Leipold, a friend who is in love with her, finds her trail with the help of the dancer "Kitten", who is also used by Stein. After all, Nikolei cannot escape the poor of the law.
