Ilana Levitan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ilana Lewitan (* 1961 in Munich ) is a German painter and object artist. She lives and works in Munich. Ilana Lewitan prefers to use acrylic paints that best suit her multi-layered way of working. Also means the photograph , the digital imaging and Collage are media that they integrated into the painting. The boundaries between figurative and abstract painting are fluid. She is a representative of the new aesthetic avant-garde .

Life

Ilana Lewitan was born in Munich. There she studied interior design and at the University of Architecture . From 1988 she worked in these professions in New York , first at Richard Meier Architects & Partners, then at Dakota Jackson , but also as a freelance illustrator . She then studied painting with Hans Daucher and Markus Lüpertz . Back in Munich, she was able to make a name for herself with several prizes in architecture and design . She has been a freelance artist and member of the Art25 artist group since 1995 and has been a lecturer in Geras, Austria , since 2012 . In 2013 Ilana Lewitan was selected at Art Karlsruhe and showed some of her new works. Of her solo exhibitions , the one in the Kunsthalle Altdorf / Ettenheim with Hubert Burda Media (2007), the one in the Ephrat Gallery, Tel Aviv (2010) and the FOR ART GALLERY (2011) located in the M50 gallery district in Shanghai are particularly noteworthy; of the group exhibitions: the art campaign for dOCUMENTA X in Kassel (1998), the exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Arts in Astana , Kazakhstan (2007), in the art gallery whiteBOX Munich (2009), in the Pasinger factory (2006), in the gallery Noah (2011) in Augsburg, the accompanying exhibition to the 27th Jewish Culture Days in Munich (2013), as well as in the Monsieur Gallery, Paris (2014). The artist is married to the psychologist and book author Louis Lewitan and has two daughters.

Quotes

The cubes and boxes, especially when they are compared with Lewitan's paintings on canvas, which were created at the same time and which meanwhile completely dispense with photographic elements, can be said to have a beautiful independence: the new genre that uses photographic and digital means to create painterly effects comes, has grown up, it continues to develop according to its own rules. The boxes and cubes have not only found their own technique, but also their own world of motifs, the connections to canvas painting have been severed. Lewitan's picture boxes also stand out from the average of what is currently going on elsewhere in the world in the area between painting and object art.

Dr. Gottfried Knapp , art historian and author

Ilana Lewitan brings photography and painterly gestures to a synthesis. She uses photographs of her family, but her painting dominates them. Here, too, the merging of photographic images and painterly expression is being painted over and cropped. However, it is also a merging of past, present and future, real trauma and visionary utopia.

Matthias Mühling , curator for international contemporary art, Lenbachhaus, Munich

Since 2011 the artist has turned to a different technique: oil on canvas. This opens up a different, slower pace in the production of her works. Instead of quick, intuitive overpainting, she condenses the color gestures that used to be applied centrifugally, violently and impasto into manifestos of calm, calming statements. In doing so, she maintains the basic characteristics of her art of telling stories and evoking memories. Even if it is often fascinatingly puzzling, in her messages to her viewers she takes a stand on current political and social issues.

Elmar Zorn , art historian and curator, Munich - from an article in ARTPROFIL, issue No. 93, July 2012
