Indochine is a French new wave - rock group .
development
The group was founded in May 1981 by Nicola Sirkis (civil: Sirchis) and Dominique Nicolas. In September 1981, Nicolas' twin brother Stéphane and Dimitri Bodiansky joined them. In France and Sweden, Indochine had a number of chart successes in the 1980s, when the band was musically still more punk , for example with the albums L'aventurier , Le péril jaune , 3 , Au zénith (live) and 7000 danses .
A turning point was the death of Stéphane, who died of hepatitis on February 27, 1999 while recording the record Dancetaria . At first there was the idea of canceling the completion of Dancetaria, but Nicola was convinced that this could not be in the interests of his deceased brother, especially since he had contributed some songs. Ultimately, however, it was feared that music journalists would always mention the death of Stéphane during the advertising tour of the new record, and it was decided to postpone the release planned for spring 1999 by half a year.
A musical style change was initiated with Dancetaria. While Indochine was initially often referred to as " Depeche Mode of France", today comparisons are more made with Marilyn Manson and Placebo , with whom there is indeed a close friendship. For example, Brian Molko from Placebo wrote a song for the Indochine LP released in autumn 2005. There was also a musical collaboration with Melissa Auf der Maur by recording the duet Le Grand Secret in 2002 . Indochine later recorded this song again with the Belgian girls' choir Scala .
The group caused a stir with their music video for the song Stef II , which was not broadcast on the major TV channels. Excerpts of the love act between two women can be seen here, and in the second half the group members appear in women's clothes.
The magazine Visions wrote in May 2003 that Indochine had a status in France that was comparable to that of Herbert Grönemeyer in Germany. In addition to France, Belgium and the French parts of Canada and Switzerland , Indochine also occurs in Scandinavia . In Germany, however, there are no appearances. Nicola Sirkis explained in an interview that Indochine would certainly be interested, but the music industry could not see any corresponding demand.
Bob Morane , a Belgian cartoon character popular in France for decades , has a special meaning for Indochine. As a kind of running gag he is mentioned in a title on every record. With L'aventurier ("The Adventurer") they dedicate a whole song and the corresponding LP to the secret agent Morane.
In December 2005, Alice & June, the successor to Paradize, was released. Indochine's first work, also available as a double album, went straight to number one on the Belgian list and number two on the French best list in the first week of publication. After only two days there was a gold record for 25,000 copies sold in Belgium. In April 2006 the album was finally released in Germany.
In March 2009 the eleventh album La République des Météors was released . For the subsequent tour, which began with a prelude at the Paris Olympia, 800,000 tickets were sold. The highlight of the tour was the performance on June 26, 2010 in the Stade de France , which has been sold out since the end of 2008, in front of 80,000 spectators.
In February 2013 the album Black City Parade was released , in which the modern urbanity of various metropolises such as Paris , New York and Tokyo is sung about, as well as that of the German cities Berlin and Wuppertal . This was followed by the Black City Tour , which again held two concerts in the Stade de France in June 2014. This is where the tour's second live album, Black City Concerts , came about .
The album 13 was released on September 8, 2017 , from which the title La vie est belle was released as a release in June 2017 .
