Ingrid Miethe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ingrid Miethe (* 1962 in Plauen ) is a German educational scientist and university professor for general educational science at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . Her research interests include educational and biography research , education and social inequality, and educational history .

Life

Miethe first studied at the Greifswald Medical School (1978–1981) and after graduating she worked as an orthoptist in the eye clinic in Plauen (1981–1985). Since 1985 she was active in the Independent Peace Movement of the GDR and was processed by the Ministry for State Security in the operational process (OV) Kantus. In autumn 1989 she was active in the New Forum and initiated the education working group in Berlin. Because of this oppositional activity, she was not allowed to study in the GDR and took on various jobs (waitress, night watchman, agricultural worker, outpatient trader). The scientific career only began after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

From 1990 to 1995 Miethe studied educational science at the Technical University of Berlin , followed by a postgraduate course in “Qualitative Research Methodology” at the Free University of Berlin (1996–1997). After completing her doctorate in political science in 1999 at the Free University of Berlin, she initially worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Educational Science at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald (1999–2002). From 2002 to 2010 she was professor for general education at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt . In 2007 Miethe completed his habilitation in educational science at the Philosophical Faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

In 2009 Miethe accepted the professorship for general educational science at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen, where she is still employed today. Since 2017 she has also been Dean of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Studies at the University of Giessen .

Scientific contribution

Miethe did research on the women's peace movement in the GDR and then expanded her research to include women's movement in East Germany and Eastern Europe as a whole. On this topic she published several publications on the differences between East and West German women's movements and the influence of the European unification process.

Miethe dealt with questions of research ethics relatively early and initiated the establishment of an ethics committee within the framework of the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE). She has been the chairman of this commission since it was founded.

As a co-founder of the “Network for Reconstructive Social Work Research” (since 2014 under the name “Network for Reconstructive Social Work - for the development of research, teaching and professional practice”), she has significantly advanced the development of reconstructive research in social work. Since 2008 she has been co-editor of the book series "Reconstructive Research in Social Work" by Barbara Budrich Verlag. With the (co-) edition of the “Handbook Qualitative Methods in Social Work”, she has made a significant contribution to the further development of this area. In addition, Miethe deals with the transfer of qualitative methods into the practice of social work . With her book “Biography Work. Teaching and handbook for study and practice ”she has created a standard work in this area.

Another focus of Miethe's research is the history of education, especially in the GDR. Here she wrote a study on the workers and farmers faculties (ABF) in the GDR . A central result of this research was the finding that the idea of these institutions was transferred to many socialist countries or those with a so-called socialist path of development. In a study of the labor faculties in Cuba, Vietnam and Mozambique, this international expansion process is examined comparatively. In doing so, Miethe made an essential contribution to the study of educational cooperation between the socialist countries and countries in the global south.

Another research focus of Miethe is the investigation of the relationship between education and social inequality. This topic is pursued both (internationally comparative) in the context of the investigation of the labor faculties, as well as in the form of independent studies. Miethe pursued this question both in the context of her investigation by ArbeiterKind.de , as well as in a generation and East-West comparison. In recent times she has critically questioned the thesis of the “strangeness of educational climbers”, which is widespread in this area, and has pointed out that this is a “myth”. Educational climbers perceive habitual differences, but these do not necessarily have to be problematic and can even be perceived as a resource. She therefore advocates an open research perspective, in which fits as well as non-fits are examined as an open empirical question.

Memberships in scientific associations (selection)

Miethe was and is a member of numerous scientific associations. Among other things, she was co-founder and editor of Femina Politica (1997–2000), board member of the Interdisciplinary Center for Women and Gender Studies at the University of Greifswald (2000–2002) and board member of the German Society for Social Work (2008–2011).

Miethe has been a board member since 2014 and has been the deputy chairwoman of the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE) since 2018 . She is also a liaison lecturer for the Hans Böckler Foundation and a contemporary witness for the Federal Foundation for Coming to terms with the SED dictatorship .
