Inquisition Symphony is the second studio album by the Finnish cello rock band Apocalyptica . It was released in 1998 by the music label Mercury Records and, like its predecessor Plays Metallica by Four Cellos , contains cover versions of metal songs played exclusively on cellos, as well as individual songs of the band's own in the cello rock that they influenced .
Music style and background
The style of the band Apocalyptica was shaped from the beginning by the cellos they used to interpret well-known songs by the band Metallica . There were also versions of other bands such as Pantera or Faith No More as well as the first original compositions. As on the debut album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos they sat on Inquisition Symphony only one Celli, only in the following album Cult was percussion added taken as an additional element. With their debut album, the band became known outside of Finland, especially as an insider tip in the metal scene.
All the pieces on the album are instrumental, no vocals appear on the album. The album was named after the song of the same name Inquisition Symphony by the Brazilian band Sepultura , which is also featured on the album.

Inquisition Symphony was released on April 6, 1998 as the band's second album. Apocalyptica can thus consolidate their reputation and increase their awareness. They are booked for appearances at major open-air festivals in Europe and Mexico and play as the opening act for Metallica in Helsinki. In 1999 they were guests at the recording of the Metallica album S&M with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in Berkeley, California and at the Dutch Headbanger's Heaven Festival they played a medley of Mandatory Suicide and South Of Heaven with Dave Lombardo .
In Finland the album rose to number 10 in the Finnish album charts, in Germany it was able to climb to number 69. The album was also well received in the trade press. In Rock Hard , the critic Holger Stratmann gave the album 9 out of 10 points and wrote: Apart from the fact that one fiddles through a much more interesting, tastefully compiled program, “The Sepultura cover 'Refuse / Resist' surpasses the original Darkness by far. A more imaginative handling of such song material (even the drum parts were coaxed from the cello) is hard to imagine. But also 'From Out Of Nowhere' (Faith No More), 'Inquisition Symphony' (Sepultura), 'Domination' (Pantera) or the Metallica classics 'For Whom The Bell Tolls', 'Nothing Else Matters', 'Fade To' Black 'and' One 'are interpreted absolutely convincingly and not "just" re-enacted. The CD creaks at every nook and cranny, and it is certainly not an exaggeration to say that this disc is considerably "heavier" than the debut. With their own three pieces, which are rhythmically based on Metallica, Helsinki's classic bangers also underline their exceptional position.
