The first International Football Cup was in the season 1961 / 62 played. The competition consisted of 32 teams, exclusively from Central Europe. The Games took place between June 18, 1961 and April 26, 1962.
The German Democratic Republic, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia sent four teams, Poland two and the Federal Republic of Germany six teams.
Ajax Amsterdam won the final on April 26, 1962 in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam by beating Feijenoord Rotterdam 4-2 .
Group stage
The teams were divided into eight groups of four teams according to their geographical location. Groups A1-A4 were for Eastern teams ( German Democratic Republic , Austria , Poland and Czechoslovakia ); Groups B1-B4 for western teams ( Netherlands , Sweden and Switzerland ). The Federal Republic of Germany was represented in both sections.
The group winner reached the quarterfinals, where groups "A" played against groups "B".
