International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) is an international human rights organization dedicated to the human rights of gay , lesbian , bisexual , transgender , intersex people and people affected by HIV or AIDS .

organization

The IGLHRC was founded in 1990 by Russian and US activists and has been a US registered non-profit organization since 1991 . It is based in New York City and has offices in San Francisco , where the Asylum Documentation Program is running, and in Buenos Aires for Latin America and the Caribbean .

The main work consists in the worldwide observation and documentation of human rights violations against LGBT persons, persons affected by HIV and those who are oppressed because of their sexual identity or their sexual behavior with persons who are old enough to determine themselves, as well as in the Mobilize replies in such cases. In many cases the IGLHRC works closely with Amnesty International . Their documentation and source material are, among other things, useful tools to help people in these groups with asylum applications . That is also the only perceived task in the otherwise quite well organized countries of North America and Western Europe.

Approximately one third of the financial resources of approximately 1.6 million US dollars (2006) come from individuals and two thirds from charitable foundations. Many active supporters of the IGLHRC work full-time or freelance for Amnesty International , ILGA , Human Rights Campaign and many government agencies.

Since July 2010, the IGLHRC has had advisory status in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations .

history

The idea for this organization arose when Julie Dorf , who was also the first "Executive Director", carried out scientific research in the USSR and interviewed men who were convicted under Section 121 of the time. The first actions of the newly founded organization were the finally successful lobbying work at Amnesty International, to extend the basis for their advocacy for prisoners of conscience to include sexual orientation and to organize an International Gay and Lesbian Symposium and Film Festival in Moscow . Over the years, the work has expanded to more and more areas of the world.

Felipa de Souza Award

The Felipa de Souza Award , which has been given to individuals or organizations almost annually since 1994, recognizes the courage and activism of national grassroots organizations and individuals who stand up for fundamental human rights for all people. Sometimes this international award also helps to make the situation of those affected more bearable.

Felipa de Souza was persecuted and tortured by the Portuguese Inquisition in Brazil in 1591 for having had a sexual relationship with another woman.
