The International Association for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics ( IUTAM ) is a global non-profit organization that promotes international cooperation between institutes whose research focuses on the fields of theoretical and applied mechanics , including analytical, computational and experimental investigations. In addition, it organizes national and multinational workshops and conferences and the general assemblies that take place every four years.

history

Even though IUTAM was founded in 1946, it can look back on a longer history. At the instigation of Theodore von Kármán , then a professor at RWTH Aachen University , 30 European physicists met in Innsbruck in September 1922 to discuss questions about hydrodynamics and aerodynamics . In this context, the wish was expressed that these subjects should be dealt with on a larger scale at periodically recurring symposia. It was agreed that Delft in the Netherlands would be a suitable location and asked the Dutch professor Wilhelm Gerard Burgers to organize a corresponding congress there.

As a result, the first official congress with 207 participants took place in Delft in 1924 under the chairmanship of the Dutch scientist Cornelis B. Biezeno , which is still only considered the unofficial founding place and year.
