Invasion is a German-Austrian film drama directed by Dito Tsintsadze from 2012 . Burghart Klaußner embodies the lonely widower Josef, with whom Nina ( Heike Trinker ) settles down with her family, which means that Josef is increasingly losing control not only over his house.

action

The 59-year-old widower Josef has to deal with the death of his wife and son. After his son was killed in a bus accident, his wife no longer had the courage to face life and soon followed her son into death. During his visits to the cemetery, he meets Nina, who introduces herself to him as the alleged cousin of his wife. She tells him that her son Simon and his wife Milena are currently looking for an apartment and are not able to find it, and she persuades Josef to offer them both temporary accommodation in his spacious villa on the outskirts of town. Soon afterwards, the couple will be followed by Nina herself with her partner Konstantin and Milena's son Marco. They all spread out in the spacious property. First of all, Josef is happy about the visitors who look after him and bring him back a bit of courage to live. Over time, however, there is more and more tension between him and his new roommates and the originally ideal world begins to crumble.

In particular, Simon is a thorn in Josef's side with his questionable upbringing methods that he displays when dealing with Milena's son Marco. Even Konstantin, who has settled in his office and runs opaque business, as well as inviting alleged clients to the property and celebrating lavish parties, attracts Josef's displeasure.

In the course of their entanglement, Simon and Nina die. Constantine, who is largely responsible for this, is killed by Josef in the forest at night when they are about to bury Nina's corpse. After that, Josef returns to the villa early in the morning, where Milena, who has meanwhile become his lover, is already waiting for him. Josef has found a new family with Milena and her son Marco and, in the hope of a carefree future, they live together on his property from now on.

criticism

Dito Tsintsadze with Anna F. , Austrian premiere of Invasion (2013)
Burghart Klaußner at the Austrian premiere

"A 'satirical' family drama that, with some comedy, gossips about do-gooders and utopians and makes the abysses visible behind the friendly façades in a malicious [sic] way."

Harald Mühlbeyer from kino-zeit.de was of the opinion that Dito Tsintsadze's invasion contained “comedic elements”, but above all the film shows the “replacement of an inner nightmare by real, external pressure.” Burghart Klaußner's acting skills are particularly emphasized, which reads as follows:

"Klaußner, anyway one of the biggest in the drama guild, lets the transformation of his character flow into his play very delicately and delicately, shows grief, joie de vivre, anger - often at the same time in one scene, in one look."

- Harald Mühlbeyer, kino-zeit.de

Heiko Thiele from Filmreporter.de found that there were “only a few successful black comedies from Germany” and that Invasion was “an exception.” Tsintsadze's production “is convincing primarily because of the sophisticated story, which offers a lot of variety and subtle dark humor [keep ready]. "Thiele also praised the cast with the following words:

“The fact that the story works despite its many twists and turns and is always understandable for the viewer is partly due to the cast. With his interpretation of the grieving widower, Burghart Klaußner gives his best performance since his appearance in 'The White Ribbon'. Anna F., Heike Trinker and David Imper convince as guests with secrets. Invasion also knows how to put the viewer under its spell in terms of atmosphere with dark images, paired with pointed music effects, and to create a feeling of seclusion and discomfort. "

- Heiko Thiele, filmreporter.de

The editorial team of Filmstarts.de . compared Tsintsadze's film with Funny Games up to The Strangers , where it "always purposefully approaches total catastrophe". The end of the review reads as follows:

“Of course Dito Tsintsadze [...] had such role models in mind when he boldly named his latest work 'Invasion'. All in all, he succeeds in playing a quite skilful game with expectations and conventions, developing a threatening atmosphere with great ambivalence, patience and a light pinch of humor. Only in the finale does the director become the victim of his idiosyncratic plot structure. "
