Ioannis Zelepos

Ioannis Zelepos ( Greek Ιωάννης Ζελεπός , * 1967 in Hamburg ) is a Greek historian and neo- Graecist .

Life

Zelepos studied history , Byzantine and Modern Greek philology at the Universities of Thessaloniki and Hamburg from 1988 to 1995 . He completed his studies with a master's thesis on Archbishop Makarios III. and the unification of Cyprus with Greece. In addition to working as a language teacher and freelance translator, he wrote a doctoral thesis on the formation of Greek identity as part of the Megali Idea in a doctoral program at the Universities of Hamburg, Berlin and Athens , with which he received his doctorate in Eastern European history at the Free University of Berlin in 2000 . Zelepos then worked as a public relations consultant at the Greek Consulate General in Hamburg (2000–2005), then as a university assistant (2005–2010) at the Institute for Byzantine and Neo- Greek Studies at the University of Vienna , where he received his habilitation in 2011 in Southeast European History and Neo- Greek Studies. He is a member of the Vienna Eastern Europe Forum research platform at the University of Vienna. In 2011/12 he worked as a lecturer at the University of Regensburg and from 2012 to 2015 as a professor for Neo-Greek Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he has been working on a DFG research project since October 2015 .

His main research interests are the history of Greece and Cyprus in the 19th and 20th centuries, Greek popular culture ( Rebetiko ) in the 20th century, research on nationalism , the Southeast European Enlightenment in the 18th century and the Orthodox Church in the Ottoman Empire (especially the Collyvadic movement ).
