Ion "Bebe" Barbu (born December 24, 1938 in Craiova , † May 2, 2011 in Piteşti ) was a Romanian football player .
Athletic career
Barbu first played unterklassig for locomotive Craiova and Dinamo Bucharest Obor in Divizia B . In 1959 he joined the then second division club Dinamo Piteşti , where he should stay for the next 15 years with a short break in the 1970/71 season. In 1961 he rose with the club for the first time in the Divizia A , the direct relegation followed the renewed promotion in 1963. As a result, the club established itself in the first division, and the team reached the final of the Cupa României in 1965 . The game was lost against Știința Cluj with 1: 2, Barbu was not one of the players used by coach Vintilă Mărdărescu .
At the end of the 1965/66 season, Barbu occupied fourth place in the table with the team, which led to qualification for the European Cup . In the Messestädte-Pokal 1966/67 the team reached the third round after successes over FC Sevilla and FC Toulouse , in which Dinamo Zagreb prevailed with a 1-0 win at Dinamo Piteşti and a 0-0 draw. At the same time, Barbu became a selection player in the Romanian national team and made his debut in November 1966 in a 4-3 victory over Poland in a friendly . Although only third to last in the following season, the team was sent again to the Messestädte Cup, where they - meanwhile renamed FC Argeş Piteşti - this time failed in the first round at Ferencváros Budapest . In the championship, however, the team was more successful and was runner-up behind Steaua Bucharest .
In 1970 Barbu moved to Beşiktaş Istanbul in Turkey. This made him one of the first Romanian players who were allowed to move abroad under the communist regime. After one season, however, he returned to Argeş Piteşti, in the 1971/72 season the club won its first championship title in club history. In the European Cup of National Champions in 1972/73 , the team reached the second round, in which they were eliminated by team captain Barbu after a 2-1 home win by a 3-1 defeat in the second leg at Real Madrid . The first leg success is still the only victory of a Romanian team over the record European Cup winner.
In 1974 Barbu ended his active career and initially worked as a trainer for Muscelul Câmpulung , Metalurgistul Cugir and DJS Argeș . Between 1978 and 1982 he held the office of President of Argeş Piteşti, under his aegis, the club was Romanian champions for the second time in the 1978/79 season . Later he worked again as a coach for various clubs.
Barbu had played a total of seven international matches between 1966 and 1968 . He had twice led the team onto the field as team captain.
In May 2011, at the age of 72, Barbu succumbed to colon cancer for which he had previously had two operations.
