action

After his wife's death in 1964, Ip Man - aka Yip Man - discovered that he had cancer of the throat as a result of smoking. After his rebellious son Ip Ching - aka Yip Ching - defends himself against a bully and is expelled, Ip decides to travel to San Francisco to look for a school. His student Bruce Lee angered the local martial arts community in San Francisco by opening a Wing Chun school, teaching martial arts to Americans, and writing an English-language book on martial arts. He learns from a staff member and his friend Liang Gen that a referral letter from the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association is required to enroll in a school. Wan, the association's president, refuses to write the letter as Ip disagrees with the grandmasters' views on Lee's actions. After a brief fight with Wan, during which they smash a glass tabletop, Ip Man leaves the building without a letter.

While leaving school after meeting the headmaster, he notices that Wan's daughter, Yonah, is being bullied and injured by a rival cheerleader, Becky, and her friends. Ip saves her and accompanies her home, where Becky accidentally cuts herself with scissors. Wan accuses Ip of using his daughter to get the letter and challenges him to fight for it. The fight is interrupted by an earthquake and Wan tells Ip that they will end their fight at the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival. Ip refuses and explains that he only brought his daughter home for her safety and is leaving.

Becky complains to her parents that she was bullied and turns the facts in their favor. Her father, Walters, an immigration and naturalization officer, is being pressured to hold the association accountable and deport all Chinese affiliates. Meanwhile, Hartman tries to convince a United States Marines staff sergeant, Barton Geddes, the Gunnery Sergeant to include Chinese martial arts in their hand-to-hand combat training. Geddes proves that current Marines karate training is superior by asking him to fight the Marines karate instructor Colin Frater, who defeats Hartman. Hartman later manages to convince the commanding officer and is instructed to film the mid-autumn festival held at the Association for Research, which annoys Geddes.

Geddes asks Frater to challenge the grandmasters at the festival and defeat some of them until Ip interferes and stops him by defeating him. Meanwhile, Wan, who was supposed to be at the festival, is arrested by the immigration officials. When Geddes sees the karate master Frater defeated, he storms into the association to find out where Wan is being kept. Once there, he attacks the masters, defeats them and injures some in the process. He then threatens Walters to release Wan into the care of the Marines before bringing Wan to camp to fight him. Following a tip from Billy, a student of Lee, the association is empty when immigration officers raid the place. Lee offers refuge for the association and deserves its respect.

Wan does well against Geddes, but is defeated and is seriously injured in the end. Ip, full of emotion, finally reveals to his son that he has cancer, which eventually allows him to speak to his father by phone after many attempts by Ip. Then Hartman takes Ip to the Marines camp and defeats Geddes in a fight. Wan has already prepared the referral letter for Ip, but Ip said he did not intend to move to San Francisco as he does not like the place. Ip makes up with his son on his return. A strong but tired Ip instructs his son to film his Wing Chun demonstration on the wooden dummy. In 1972, Ip died of cancer at the age of 79, and Lee pays homage to his master at the funeral.

The epilogue reveals that the Marines officially incorporated Chinese martial arts into their routine in 2001.
