Ipomoea obscura is a plant from the genus of Morningglory ( Ipomoea ) within the family of wind plants (Convolvulaceae). It iswidespreadin the Old World .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Ipomoea obscura is a winding, herbaceous plant , the stems of which can be hairless, protruding or almost woolly hairy. The stems are slightly angled and 1 to 2 m long.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 1.5 to 3.5 cm long. The leaf blade is at a length of 2 to 8 cm and a width of 1.6 to 8 cm heart-shaped round to oval, with occasional kidney-shaped, heart-shaped and Spreitenbasis spitzzulaufendem or pointed upper end. They are hairless or sparsely hairy. The leaf margins are whole or finely wavy.

Generative characteristics

The 1.4 to 4 cm long inflorescence stem is almost thread-shaped. The inflorescence contains only one to three flowers. The bracts are awl-shaped and about 1.5 mm long. The flower stalks are 0.8 to 2 cm long, almost hairless and thickened on the fruit and bent back at the tip.

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The sepals are elliptical-egg-shaped, almost the same size and 4 to 5 cm long. They are hairless or more or less hairy and small-pointed, they are bent back on the fruit, the outer ones have whitish edges. The crown is funnel-shaped, 2 to 2.5 cm long, white to pale yellow, the bands along the axis of the petals are darker, the center of the crown is purple. The stamens do not protrude beyond the crown, the stamens are clearly of unequal length. The pistil does not protrude beyond the crown, the ovary is hairless and has a stylus with a two-lobed stigma .

The capsule fruits are conical-ovoid or almost spherical with a pointed upper end with a diameter of 6 to 8 mm. The seeds are black-brown, 4 to 5 mm long and densely gray-brown, finely felted.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.

Locations

Ipomoea obscura grows in thickets, open forests, sandy soils and on sea coasts at altitudes from 0 to 1600 m.

Systematics

The first publication took place in 1762 under the name ( Basionym ) Convolvulus obscurus by Carl von Linné . The new combination to Ipomoea obscura (L.) Ker Gawl. was published in 1817 by John Bellenden Ker Gawler .

Of Ipomoea obscura , there are three varieties:

  • Ipomoea obscura var. Demissa (Hallier f.) Verdc. : It only occurs in Tanzania .
  • Ipomoea obscura (L.) Ker Gawl. var. obscura : It occurs in the tropics and subtropics of the Old World.
  • Ipomoea obscura var. Sagittifolia Verdc. : It occurs from Tanzania to Zimbabwe.
