Irene Gerlach
Irene Gerlach (born November 12, 1955 in Krefeld ) is a German political scientist and university professor . From March 2011 to February 2015 she was Vice Rector for Research and Continuing Education at the Evangelical University of Rhineland-Westphalia-Lippe Bochum . She is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Family Issues at the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth , which she chaired from 2011 to 2016.
Scientific career
Gerlach studied sociology , psychology and philosophy at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and Bielefeld University . In 1987 she was at the University of Münster for Dr. rer. pole. PhD . Her habilitation in political science on the subject of “Family as the Content of State Action” in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic followed in 1994, also in Münster.
After serving as professorships in Münster, Freiburg, Hamburg and Friborg, Gerlach took up the professorship for political science at the Evangelical University of Applied Sciences Rhineland-Westphalia-Lippe in the 2008 winter semester. There she was appointed Vice Rector for Research and Further Education in 2011. She continues to work as a private lecturer at the University of Münster.
In 1998 Gerlach was appointed by the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Christine Bergmann, to the Scientific Advisory Board for Family Issues at the Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. She was elected chairwoman of the board in 2011. After her re-election in 2013, Irene Gerlach resigned the chairmanship in 2016 after the maximum term of six years.
Research priorities
Early on in her academic career, Gerlach developed a specialization in questions of family, social and educational policy, for which she published extensively. A special feature is the research on the role of companies and businesses as employers in the compatibility of work and family. In this context, together with Helmut Schneider and Alexander Dilger, she founded the research center for family-conscious personnel policy in 2005 with funds from the non-profit Hertie Foundation .
