The Island class is a class of double-ended ferries operated by the Canadian shipping company BC Ferries .

history

The first two units of the class were ordered in spring 2017. They were built by Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania and shipped to Canada with the semi-submersible ship Sun Rise of the South Korean shipping company Pan Ocean at the end of November 2019 . In November 2019, BC Ferries ordered four more units of the type. It is planned to expand the fleet with additional units of the class. The construction costs for the first two ships were given as 86.5 million CAD and for the following four ships at 200 million CAD.

The ships are intended to operate on the Georgia Strait and Queen Charlotte Straits . The first two ferries will run between Powell River on the Canadian mainland and Blubber Bay in the north of Texada Island in the Strait of Georgia and between Port McNeill on Vancouver Island and Alert Bay on Cormorant Island and Sointula on Malcolm Island in Queen Charlotte Road and replaced the North Island Princess between Powell River and Blubber Bay and the Quadra Queen II between Port McNeill and Alert Bay or Sointula .

The other four ferries in the class are intended for use between Campbell River on Vancouver Island and Quathiaski Cove on Quadra Island and Nanaimo Harbor on Vancouver Island and Descanso Bay on Gabriola Island . They are supposed to replace a larger ferry, the Powell River Queen and the Bowen Queen . By using two smaller ferries on the two routes, BC Ferries can offer more frequent departures.

description

The ships are equipped with two diesel generators, each with 1,500  kW power equipped, the two generator rooms on the fuselage housed the ships. In addition, an emergency generator with 155 kW output is installed. The generators feed the lithium-ion batteries with 800  kWh , from which the drive motors draw their energy. The drive motors, each with 900 kW output for the first two ferries of the class and 950 kW output for the following units, drive two propeller pods with twin Schottel STP 340 propellers , one of which is located at the ends of the ships.

The engines are equipped with SCR -Abgasbehandlungssystem for reduction of nitrogen oxides equipped. The waste heat from the engines is used for heating on board.

The passenger facilities are located on the main deck and the sun deck above. They are on one side of the ships, next to the area reserved for the carriage of vehicles. 101 seats are available here, some at tables. Another 40 seats are located on the sun deck.
