Iso Kern (born October 3, 1937 in Bern ) is a Swiss philosopher specializing in Chinese philosophy .

Life

After graduating from the municipal high school , Kern studied philosophy from 1956 to 1960, initially for three years at the Institut Supérieur de Philosophie at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium and then for the fourth year at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg im Breisgau. He received his doctorate in Louvain (Leuven) in October 1961 with a dissertation on Husserl's relationship to Kant and Neo-Kantianism .

From February 1962 to autumn 1971, Kern worked at the Husserl Archive in Leuven on the publication of the texts on the phenomenological theory of intersubjectivity from Husserl's shorthand estate. During this time, from 1963 to 1965, Kern studied colloquial Chinese at the Sinological Institute of the University of Leuven .

In 1972 Iso Kern went to Heidelberg . There he completed his habilitation in July 1973 at the Ruprecht-Karls-University with the text Idea and Method of Philosophy. Guiding principles for a theory of reason. Until the end of the winter semester 1978/79, Kern taught philosophy at the University of Heidelberg as a permanent lecturer. On April 1, 1979, he had terminated his open-ended contract in order to devote himself to Chinese philosophy.

Until October 1984, Iso Kern was studying at the National Taiwan University , at Columbia University in New York City and at the Philosophical Institutes of the Universities of Nanjing and Beijing . After his return to Switzerland, Kern took on teaching positions in Chinese philosophy at the Universities of Zurich and Friborg .

From 1985, Iso Kern then taught at the University of Bern on Daoism , Confucianism and Buddhism in China . In 1995 he was appointed adjunct professor .

He lives with his Chinese wife in Krattigen on Lake Thun.
